THere's an early 80s Rockpalast with him that's pretty good. But I think most of what I've heard by him from the 70s is pretty good.& Marcus Garvey seems to have a jazziness or something about it that always had me mixing it into either Can or Miles Davis when I was making mix tapes

Thanks for the recommendations. Somebody commented on my post that Funky Kingston by Toots and the Maytals is really good. Does anyone else recommend that one?
― yugi ex, Saturday, 7 November 2015 16:30 (eight years ago) link
Yeah Toots pretty great throughout 60s & 70s. One of the best singers and group pretty great.I have the old Trojan 2cd 5446 That's My Number that I think has at least some of the lp on..Think I mainly love him around Pressure Drop though. Not sure if current Trojan compis duplicate what I've got. But I think there are some pretty thorough sets out.

Yeah, I was listening to them a lot the other week, when it first started to feel really summery. Marcus Garvey used to be my go-to album but lately I listen to Social Living more. That whole 1975-78 run is absolutely amazing, though, including the a cappella version of "Jah No Dead" that's on the Rockers soundtrack. And the version of "Spear Burning" that opens the Live in Paris '88 album is incredible.

yeah i've also been listening to man in the hills and social living a lot. they're just as good as marcus garvey which is ... unbelievable

thread revive inspired me to put on Hail H.I.M. for the first time in years, and that's also just as great. imo Rodney's run from Studio One Presents to Hail is one of those impressively consistent multiple-album runs that we have at least one thread about.
if you've slept on Hail, check out "African Teacher":

For all I love Rodney at his heaviest, he can be so *sweet* and Nayah/Nyah Keith is him at his sweetest.

"marcus senior"... like funk music in a floating world
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 21 June 2020 20:54 (three years ago) link
but really the moment that sends it over for me is when "civilize reggae" turns into a dub of itself

We’re in the midst of a truly god forsaken heat wave here and “Marcus Children Suffer” has been lodged in my skull. I can respect Social Living as the favorite. The first Studio One lp was my introduction though—to Burning Spear but it was also probably the first reggae album I heard after Legend—and I don’t think anything will ever shift it

I'm a Marcus Garvey partisan myself. "Slavery Days" is just flawless
