who is the true heir of Galaxie 500?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 31 October 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

none. galaxie 500 was better than the sum of its parts.
however, i used to like luna better with the first albums, but lately i'm a bit tired of them doing the same thing over and over, whilst i'm loving d&n's mellower folkie stuff more each time.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 31 October 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Damon & Naomi - though Damon's sermonising at Terrastock was earnest but a little cheesy - yes Damon if we all played music all the time there would be no war...but who would peel the potatoes?

So in fact I'm gonna go for Naomi on her own as aside from the above I prefer her voice and she plays a harmonium which is way cool.

And of course D&N have been playing with Ghost who are great.

tigerclawskank, Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

He always goes into those speeches at T-Stock. Nicole still hates him for anti-DJ comments at T2.

Luna. they've got the tunes

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Luna, nothing can hurt more then D&N's live work.

Though Ghost having Damon and Naomi singing along are better heirs.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

D&N - took all the cash from a gig also featuring Tim Keegan & the Mountain Goats here in London

Luna - I couldn't get into the Holly Golightly show @ Emo Jr.s, cos all the college kids were in Emo's watching Dean & co.

A pox on both of them.

Wandering Boy Poet, Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

even with a gun to my head i couldn't make this choice, because listening to either would be A FATE WORSE THAN DEATH.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Damon & Naomi all the way. Listen to any of the Galaxie 500 songs say "When Will You Come Home" Dean can't sing his way out of a paper bag. Pick up any Luna song say "Smash Your Tires" or whatever its called produced to the point where why even bother to have Dean sing, it sounds like its all punched in...Damon and Naomi to me seems to have a more honest this is what we really sound like live feeling, they get down with Ghost, blurred out with Wayne and Kate from Twisted Village, run their own publishing company called Exact Change that has brought back some great experimental literature and Naomi plays harmonium my favorite non-rockist instrument ever...advantage Damon & Naomi

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The first three albums of each are pretty good, Lunapark being the best of the lot. After that, Luna forgot to write another song but just kept changing the lyrics.

in other words, joan is OTM

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like Lunapark so much -- probably my least favorite of any Luna I own. I think Penthouse has the tightest songwriting.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm siding with Dean because I have seen both live in the last few years and I could not wait until D&N got off the stage. Luna on the other hand is excellent live. I believe Dean and Luna have been going much more the way that G500 would have naturally progressed if they stayed together. Dean is much nicer in person also and will sign G500 merch, D&N refuse to sign any old stuff and seem very depressed, mean and moody in person.

'Dean is much nicer in person also and will sign G500 merch, D&N refuse to sign any old stuff and seem very depressed, mean and moody in person.'

totally wrong. dean is very nice, true.
d&n are the sweetest couple one could ever meet. depressed, mean and moody? you met them on a baaad day. either that, or it was their impersonators.

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

Thread should be updated as Dean & Britta vs. Damon & Naomi. In fact, what a great outdoor summer concert that would make, if Damon & Naomi stuck mostly to their first album. Which remains utterly brilliant (though I always wonder if Kramer gets the credit for that).

Luna. they've got the tunes

― M Matos (M Matos)

It does help if the tunes are not terribly snoozy, doesn't it, though?... Luna = DUD...

I'll take D&N and G500 and leave Luna behind.

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Monday, 11 October 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

luna = classic ... one of my favorite bands.

tylerw, Monday, 11 October 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

i like d&n's records, but they are nowhere near as good as luna was live.

tylerw, Monday, 11 October 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

Luna is amazing live.

This is so unbelievably wrong.

Oh, btw, going to see B&S this Friday and just found out that Dean W. is opening and playing Galaxie 500 songs. SO DAMN EXCITED.

master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

Listened to Romantica most of the weekend: could listen to "Lovedust" and "Renee is Crying" all day. Fuck Galaxie 500.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

oh we needn't go that far -- all of these groups/people are great!
enbb -- very jealous, the reports i've heard from the dean/g500 shows have been superpositive. wonder if damon and naomi will show up -- they're still in boston, i think. that'd be awkward.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

LOL yeah it would. I thought the same thing at first and was then like yeah, that's never going to happen.

I didn't even believe my friend when he first told me. He was at the Wang for something last week and saw it. It looks like this is the only show that he's opening for them on too. I can't wait.

master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

My fave parts of G500 are Damon & Naomi's so I'm kinda biased that way

Okay you're kidding, right?

Romantica is quite possibly the #1 worst album in the entire G500/D&N/Luna career triptych.

Either that, or Rendezvous...

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

never heard either, didn't really feel the need.

evian fatigue (electricsound), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

(romantica & rendezvous, not luna & d&n)

evian fatigue (electricsound), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

Btw, has there ever been a band with worse cover art than Luna?

They never had much money.

Nah -- Pup Tent and The Days of Our Nights are more labored.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

Pup Tent is fantastic!

master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

Damon & Naomi with Ghost > On Fire > Today > More Sad Hits > Penthouse > This Is Our Music > everything else...

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

days of our nights is mad underrated

Some of Luna's best tracks were on singles where they really let loose, none of the snoozy stuff. And their covers were ACE.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 03:38 (fifteen years ago)

Did anyone read Dean's book?

MyFatherWillGuideMeUpARopeToYourMum (MaresNest), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:35 (fifteen years ago)

I did. I think there's a thread dedicated to it somewhere.

master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 10:35 (fifteen years ago)

Oh cool, thanks!

Awed at the wedding band posting.

OK so just had to say that Dean and Britta were amazing. They sounded phenomenal and it was just incredible to hear them play G500 songs.
