OPO: Rocket From The Tombs --- Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer" vs Pere Ubu "30 Seconds Over Tokyo"

I just saw the current incarnation of Rocket From The Tombs last night. I've known it in my head for some time, of course, but seeing it happen onstage, the thought that the same band birthed two songs that rank among my favorite songs ever as the first singles from two separate splinter groups still made me a little bit dizzy.

Vote for your favorite. Discuss your favorite version (RFTT or the band that popularized it). Play them both often.

Will have to think about it.

Hmmmmmmm......

I'm seeing them next Saturday, not sure what it will be like, but anyway.

Favourite version of 30 Seconds Over Tokyo = RFTT - The Day The Earth Met...

Favourite version of Sonic Reducer = Dead Boys - Younger, Louder & Snottier

Favourite song? Jury is still out.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 6 December 2015 12:07 (eight years ago) link

Still can't decide.

Haven't really listened to the reunion band that much. Do like that guitar rumble where you later get Ravenstine on the Earth Met the recordings. But I think I might still prefer 70s Ubu.
Though the Day Earth Met the is a fantastic record I'd readily recommend to anybody into protopunk/hard rock stuff. Do love that lp and do wish there was more of them from then.

Anyway, love all the original RFTT stuff on The Day The Earth Met The..., never really delved into the Pere Ubu catalog much, perhaps need to rectify that, see there in big holes in it in the streaming services.

I cannot recommend enough the Datapanik in the Year Zero box set - the band's debut EP and first five albums with a ton of live stuff and rarities, some of which are done by groups related to Pere Ubu but not Ubu per se.

You can find it for sale for a fairly reasonable price at Amazon and Discogs.

30 seconds should win this in a landslide. The rftt version is phantastic. It takes no prisoners.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 25 December 2015 21:05 (eight years ago) link

stinking attitude isnt quite right actually, its a combination of not GAF, nihilism, but also melancholic
