Recommend me something that's dirty, raucous, and fun... but also arty, melodic, and memorable

Having real trouble finding anyone what I'm looking for. Maybe something sort of like Brainiac or Polvo, but with the weirdness toned down a shade and more song oriented. "Fun" and "arty" (or at least non-formulaic) at least seem hard to find in the same place, and I'm often finding that music that is the least bit challenging is rarely melodically memorable. Want your suggestions!

Adam & the Ants are SO MUCH BETTER than Cardiacs, geez

sarahell, Monday, 7 December 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

Or idk there's always Natsumen. Their rhythms can get quite knotty and complex but the approach to melody/harmony is usually fairly simplistic so they're pretty catchy. Way more fun than instrumental jazz-rock has any right to be anyway.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 7 December 2015 19:53 (nine years ago) link

It's true, but is he better than Deep Turtle? xp

I'm not kidding, btw. There's A Vomitsprinkler In My Liverriver is literally the one album from anywhere ever that lies at the grimy joyous heart of this request. Hear it right now.

Deep Turtle were great! I think I probably first heard of them because of you a while back ago. If anything I like the singles collection Rip-Off Dokumento even more than their album

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 7 December 2015 20:06 (nine years ago) link

Shit, I need to hear that! Thanks for the tip-off...

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I flipped through a couple Cardiacs albums and the Deep Turtle album, and both seemed to me almost as spastic, weird, and phantasmagorical as Mr. Bungle. I think I could get into the Cardiacs, but right now I'm looking for the weirdness to be toned down even more than either of those bands. Like maybe 20% weird. These bands are like 75% weird.

Do you like Mew? They're more "pretty" than "dirty and raucous" though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 7 December 2015 20:29 (nine years ago) link

Just listened to a Mew song, and the production is far too clean/sterile/modern for me. Also, yeah, not very raucous. I like stuff that sounds a little (or a lot) uncontrolled.

Any number of Royal Trux albums might fit the bill, if you're unfamiliar (Accelerator is maybe closest to what you're asking for). Latter-day Melt Banana brings a bit of melodicism to the table of crazy (like Bambi's Dilemma).

My answer this year would be Major Games

...who are strike me as ELO mugged by a In the Red band.

Ten years ago, my answer would have been The Pony's Celebration Castle.

Fastbacks song is nice! Very very nice! Lovely pop-punk.

I'm reluctant to venture too far from Cardiacs or the 1990s for this...so here's Sidi Bou Said

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1sVJ1SqD40

Patagonian Rats by Tera Melos might just fit the bill, earlier stuff's more generic math-rock and later more pop, that particular record is a goo dbalance of both w/ some noisy freakouts here and there.

http://teramelos.bandcamp.com/album/patagonian-rats

It's hard to think of things that are complex, hooky AND noisy without being a bit weird.

I mean there's Tatsuya Yoshida's band Ruins and Koenji Hyakkei as well but they may again be too odd for what you're looking for right now.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 7 December 2015 23:20 (nine years ago) link

looool Koenjihyakkei will send poliopolice into a stupor

actually no that's a lie, they're really straightforward, maybe not even 20% weird, let's call it 18%

this is a pretty little ditty

Also, I've never heard Sidi Bou Said before and I thought I'd heard everything Cardiacs related (that's been officially released). I'll have to give them further listens.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 7 December 2015 23:49 (nine years ago) link

jeez, the bands listed here are all weirder than brainiac. you should listen to, like, the music from katamari damacy. or maybe some polysics or something. here's a styx cover. if it's too weird for you, i don't know, maybe just listen to some beck or something:

rushomancy, Monday, 7 December 2015 23:51 (nine years ago) link

^thought of this band as well, poliopolice you should check out the album, stuff like the opening track ('the king of evil') is exactly what you're after i think

xpost to the monsoon bassoon

rushomancy probably otm

also, this song was featured on john oliver's show a couple months back, and i like it. i have no idea if this is at all representative of contemporary thai rock. if goofy east asian takes on national socialism offend you, though, maybe give it a miss:

rushomancy, Monday, 7 December 2015 23:54 (nine years ago) link

also, have you heard vertical scratchers? i think schmersal from brainiac is one of them.

I'm still going through this list. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Any number of Royal Trux albums might fit the bill, if you're unfamiliar (Accelerator is maybe closest to what you're asking for).

Out of everything I've had a chance to listen to, I'd say this is the closest so far. It rocks, and things go in unexpected directions but it's not masturbatory and weird-for-weird's-sake. Still making my way through the list though. The Fastbacks song is cool, and I'm actually a big fan of theirs, but I wouldn't have said they pushed any envelopes for weirdness, though they hit on a lot of the other pieces I'm looking for. I listened to a couple Goblin Mold songs, and liked the general vibe, but not really raucous and fun to my ears.

Will update on the full list when I get the chance. Thanks again for the suggestions, and keep 'em coming if you have others.
