Mummy, what's an MC Pitman?

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 1 November 2002 06:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

What do you mean by "take seriously"? Both their records are very funny.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 November 2002 08:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

because Pitman is so blatantly and obviously entirely parody and novelty - cant see how you could argue otherwise - whereas there is an element of 'but seriously...' in much of Skinner'work however laughable you may judge the results of that - also SKinner appears to have a desire to sustain a career in what he does and to be pop as much as anything else but i suspect the Pitman thing is merely a means to an end - the person behind it just doing it 'for a laugh' but also maybe using it as a way to perhaps get into making other music and being a success in a more commercially-viable manner - just my suggestion you understand

We are? Damn why didn't somebody tell me?

nobody's come up with a decent worthwhile crticism of The Streets - oh he's all Mockney...big deal, he moved down to London and he loves it and naturally he picks up the characteristics, whats wrong with that? maybe he's putting it on a bit too much but hey its funny and i think he's self-aware. i really dont give a toss about the concept of 'flow' or even the quality of his lyrics when the output and delivery are as refreshing as his are - plus you forget how young he is...Pitman's probably 30 ;)

nobody's come up with a decent worthwhile crticism of The Streets

What about the fact that he's a wasteful scumbag for releasing Don't Mug Yourself for the sure-to-be-met-with-mild-indifference third single off the album instead of the vastly superior Too Much Brandy?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

FOURTH SINGLE!!!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

i said that first Matt! but i like 'dont mug yourself' now and i like hearing it around town at the mo cos its a single...'too much brandy' wouldnt have worked really cos i doubt they'd be able to retain the 'you wan buy cocaine?' skit in it

plus the fact that its the fourth single can be applied to so many bands that as a criticism of Skinner himself it dont quite cut the mustard

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 14:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I know... I just thought it'd be amusing to throw your own criticism back in your face.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

well i never said it was decent

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 14:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haha, people take The Streets seriously?

Callum (Callum), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes callum- many ppl here take pop seriously. a lot of ppl here are pro-pop (nearly everybody finds something good in it), though a lot of music is discussed.

Don't Mug Yourself sounds like it belongs on the Go-Kart Mozart album. (Why are we supposed to take the Streets seriously and not Lawrence Heyward?)

jamesmichaelward (jamesmichaelward), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have always taken Lawrence Hayward as seriously as my life.
