All I know are the Spice Girls, S Club 7, and Steps (but aren't they from Australia)

anything produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman between 1985 and 1990 - Bananarama, Sinitta, Big Fun, Brother Beyond and Sonia mainly

i hate it all obviously but i figure it fits the description of what you're looking for

I prefer to call it 'bubblegum',other acts of recent note-Scooch(better than Steps),All Stars(similar to S Club Juniors,'Things that go Bump in the Night'is great bubblegum),A-Teens(Swedish S Club),early Atomic Kitten,Alcazar(check out 'Crying at the Discotheque',one of the singles of the year),Girls@Play(Spice Girls without the hits)A1.Bubblegum remixers of note-Almighty Productions & Jewels & Stone. All great kiddie pop

I agree,60s & 70s bubblegum from The Lemon Pipers & The Peppermint Rainbow to The Bay City Rollers & Wombles was fantastic, but I love loads of this shiny new stuff too, very underrated.

Would Right Said Fred apply? I'm too sexy for this thread.

Alcazar(check out 'Crying at the Discotheque',one of the singles of the year)

I'm pretty sure that was released last year- and it's hardly what I'd call kiddie Pop. Top tune, tho.

It came out here in the UK early this year,it's been a long year.I agree it's more G.A.Y than kiddie

Steps are English.

The best S/A/Wsong ever:

(crazy girl voice): HEEEEYYYEEEYYYEEYYYEYEYEYEYEYEYEYEEEYYYYYYY!!!!!

HEY ROADBLOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(sax solo)

Gonna be a roadblock
Roadblock
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Roadblock
Roadblack
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

(repeat for like ten minutes)

Evan, Saturday, 2 November 2002 21:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

There was a tv documentary about Pete Waterman recently which, apart from largely excising Stock and Aitken from the story, repeated the Waterman-planted hype that 'Roadblock' conned the cognoscenti into thinking it was a genuine 'rare groove'. I've never understood this. Even at the time I remember listening to it and thinking that it sounded of its time, still with a SAW-ish quality and no way some kind of obscure sub James brown funk.

Was "Roadblock" the beginning of that enduring tactic where non-credible acts release their records as club promos under pseudonyms?
