sounds like probably the 'untitled' TPAB outtakes that he's been performing on TV shows. pretty excited, i was starting to resign myself to the assumption that he'll never release a studio version of the track he did on Fallon.

all the songs are dated and only one of them says '2016' and the rest are 2013/2014 so i'm guessing that yeah this is pretty much the cutting room floor for that album.

It's amazing how this is transparently a collection of TPAB offcuts that was just tossed out there as an afterthought goodwill gesture and yet it is so much better than the album that Kanye spent months and months hyping and overworking.

punch gave an interview where he seemed to insinuate that "unmastered" may not refer to the actual practice of mastering a recording:

The second part of the project’s name, though, isn't just a label for the raw recordings. "Everything that we do is deliberate so if you hear something that says Unmastered, we absolutely did that on purpose,” Punch explained. “There’s more than one meaning behind that.

"We’re definitely trying to break chains musically and socially," he continues. "The whole thing to me just represents breaking the chains, whatever those chains might be, whatever chains society puts on you. We’re trying to break those and be free.”

given the subject matter of kendrick's music it wouldn't surprise me if the subtext was really the more important implication there

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 March 2016 19:30 (eight years ago) link

http://thequietus.com/articles/19852-kendrick-lamar-untitled-unmastered-review

The truth is that people project on Lamar whatever they want him to be. For many, his music provides a corrective to what they see as the vapid vulgarity of trap, a belief that persists despite his repeated references to women as "bitches". His willingness and aptitude for talking seriously and relatably about the black American experience, Lamar is forgiven for unvarnished lyrics we'd scoff at were they delivered by Lupe Fiasco, or that we'd tolerate from Talib Kweli.

ive not heard the new album/ep/tape/whatever yet so who knows if hes right, but kendrick doesnt seem prone to 'unvarnished' lyrics like talib is, even if he does rap about dicks and skyscrapers from time to time, but even that one seemed to fit, whereas talib often blurts out gauche lines that seem to come out of nowhere.

Love the voice pitch mutations on this record
Super effective and low key

Ross, Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:54 (five years ago) link

I can understand why a lot of this material ended up on the cutting room floor, and it has nothing to do with quality - there's a lot of very good to great stuff on this. Rather, it's hard for me to picture exactly where in the tracklisting of To Pimp a Butterfly any of this stuff could have slotted, and I wouldn't want to bump anything from To Pimp a Butterfly to make way for anything here because it's perfect as it is and the album is already long enough as it is.

I think Untitled Unmastered works well as a standalone listen, but it's also impossible for me to see it as anything other than an extension of To Pimp a Butterfly, kinda like a P.S. to that album but also giving a broader picture of what Kendrick was up to creatively during that time period.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 11 August 2018 10:09 (five years ago) link

Yeah fair.

The hip hip hooray vocals are cloying

But there’s some seriously great low key material here. Are there any guests on this record or is that Kendrick pitch shifting himself throughout?
