Aw, it's really good!
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Thursday, 12 January 2017 15:13 (seven years ago) link
it's a bit more energetic than they ever really were isn't it? the sound is nice but the song is a bit repetitive and it doesn't really have what i liked about them.
― ufo, Thursday, 12 January 2017 15:42 (seven years ago) link
it's alright. maybe they'll tour again :)
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 12 January 2017 15:51 (seven years ago) link
it's kinda boring and doesn't really go anywhere and that riff sounds like the 30th best new order riff or something but i still kinda like it. i like the guitar sound.
― scott seward, Thursday, 12 January 2017 15:59 (seven years ago) link
i really like it! totally here for their comeback
― josh, Thursday, 12 January 2017 16:33 (seven years ago) link
Song is OK, but it needs a chorus.
― daavid, Thursday, 12 January 2017 16:45 (seven years ago) link
sounds ride-y
― am0n, Thursday, 12 January 2017 19:17 (seven years ago) link
I like that new song, it's got a similar feel to the Black Hearted Brother album.
― michaellambert, Thursday, 12 January 2017 20:03 (seven years ago) link
True! I figure that's gonna be a more apt reference point for Slowdive in 2017 than stuff from 20+ years ago.
― geoffreyess, Thursday, 12 January 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link
Was kind of hoping for Pygmalion Part Two to be honest.
― Austin, Thursday, 12 January 2017 21:54 (seven years ago) link
I totally dig it, it reminds me of the best bits of the Minor Victory album.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 12 January 2017 23:30 (seven years ago) link
It's good - reunion records are hit and miss so this is a relief
― Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Friday, 13 January 2017 00:06 (seven years ago) link
i really like this, hope the album is in a similar vain.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 14 January 2017 02:41 (seven years ago) link
Similarly vain?
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 January 2017 03:24 (seven years ago) link
lol, going too fast like always (this is chat without the *) *vein, still need an edit button for ilx.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 14 January 2017 04:28 (seven years ago) link
Oh man, this song is great. Really great. What a return to form! Fuck... can't wait for the album to drop.
On a personal note, I got into Slowdive when I was living in Santa Cruz during a bad spot in my life and they were great therapy. Now whenever I hear them I get visuals of a cloudy beach and the feelings of comfort and hope. This song immediately brought back those emotions and I'm in love again.
― octobeard, Saturday, 14 January 2017 20:44 (seven years ago) link
Is an album confirmed?
Was only half listening to the interview with Rachel on 6 Music but thought she said they'd be releasing some new tracks this year but nothing about an album.
― groovypanda, Saturday, 14 January 2017 22:13 (seven years ago) link
Damnit don't dash my hopes like this
― octobeard, Saturday, 14 January 2017 23:00 (seven years ago) link
Well per my opening note above, the announcement of the new track also specifically mentioning signing to Dead Oceans -- so some sort of formal release is implied but hey, maybe they're going totally old school and releasing three EPs first.

I run all my music via a lossless iTunes library running from an old iMac to a nice DAC plugged into my stereo. Anyway when I called up "recent additions" to put the new Slowdive album on, iTunes slotted the tracks from the 1990 Slowdive EP into the list because the name was the same. While playing it slipped seamlessly from "Slomo" into "Slowdive" while I had my attention on the stuff I'm working on. I made a brief mental note that yeah, the new record really does have a similar sound to the old stuff, this really does sound like ... wait a minute ... !

these songs all sound like they have been living in my head for years in the most fantastic way .

best not-forced sounding comeback
― fauxmarc, Thursday, 8 June 2017 17:33 (six years ago) link
Got home pretty blotto and beat down and blasted this very loud. It was heaven. Also the vinyl mastering on this one is really nice. Sugar For the Pill is kind of an instant classic.

Interview with Simon here.
Nice to see he's talking about the next album and so this hopefully won't be one of those one album reunions.

i was a casual slowdive fan, didn't spend a ton of time w/them back in the day but had some friends that liked them and did listen to them on spotify from time to time
anyway, i've been listening to a decent bit of old and new slowdive recently and maybe i'm challopsing but i think this new one is their best album (for me at least)

Mission of Burma ftw.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link
The fourth Mazzy Star album (following a 17-year hiatus) I think could also fairly be called a not-forced sounding comeback.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 15:05 (six years ago) link
yeah burma almost felt even more like an extension than a comeback, or maybe the album they were working on when they split, like it had some from Forget like "Playland" and "Hunt Again" and then Max Ernst

"It would be ridiculous if we were in it for the money because we spent every penny we made from the reformation gigs on the new album." Lol
They were GREAT at Roskilde last saturday. My back hurt so I left a bit early, but then they hit their final noisy climax at exactly the moment the sun came back out for the first time in four days, and it was magical.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link
kind of growing on me
― i n f i n i t y (∞), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link
Those ambient and more minimal techno influences are going to be stronger in the next record, plus Terry Reilly or Steve Reich-type minimalism.
from that interview upthread
― global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 19:17 (six years ago) link
I didn't like "Sugar For The Pill" when I heard it as a single but in the album it sounds fine. I've ended up really liking this album, it's sounded great on the stronger days of summer.
