I voted for I Love This Life. It's one of my 20 favourite songs of all time.

there are so many special, moving songs here but for me it's between "i love this life", "st. catherine's day", and "regret"

"i love this life" is just an immaculately crafted song, really unfairly well-composed considering it was the band's first single. i do like how (musically) it's sort of unique among most of their early songs, most of which tend to be much more melancholy. it's impossible to listen to those bouncing keyboards and not want to just dance. and that moment in the chorus when the keys shift down in pitch, just before the refrain -- music does not get much better than that imo

the thing i love most about "st. catherine's day" is just how shameless it is in its emotivity, those melancholy keyboards that open the song -- most artists save moments like that for a climax -- and how buchanan comes right out and belts the first few lyrics. i love a song that doesn't fuck around -- it basically is telling you "look, this song is going to devastate you, and you're going to have to deal with that". this song more or less is the essence of this band for me

"regret", i mean...maybe it's kind of a facsimile of "let's go out tonight" -- both make amazing use of octave change toward the end -- but it works, and it never, ever gets old. just a perfect, simple little song. and don't even get me started on the lyrics...

I think I gotta go with "I Love This Life," because it's maybe the best musical expression of unabashed joy I've ever heard.

However, "Young Club" and "The Second Act" are both right there behind.

Anybody know the story behind "Young Club"?

One missing: the version of "Easter Parade" w/ Rickie Lee Jones on the "Headlights on the Parade" single. She complements Buchanan's vocals well.

For me, hard choice. I really love the trumpet in "O Lolita", a song that ages well as I age. Guess it's down to "Wish Me Well" vs. "Regret". The former, when it hits "There were days / we got it right" hits me with the same emotional gut punch that "Family Life" does. Went with the latter, though, as I agree - it is just a perfect, simple little song. In "Citizen Kane", there's a speech that Joseph Cotten gives about a girl he once saw from afar, decades prior, who he never talked to, but he's never forgotten. Just like "It's 3:30, and I'm thinking of you...". Also, still remember the stunned joy of finding a used "The Tree & the Bird & the Fish & the Bell" cd with the unheard "Regret" at Rubato Records all those years ago.

Write in vote for the Rickie Lee Jones version of 'Easter Parade', otherwise between 'I Love This Life', 'New York Man' and 'The Wires Are Down'.
