It's too bad Easy Lover only appeared on Bailey's album and not Collins' album as well, but that's life.

I'm voting for Inside Out.

Sussudio, easily

Long Long Way To Go is possibly the last time Sting's voice on a recording was a feature and not a bug.

TAKE ME HOME

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 25 June 2017 19:46 (six years ago) link

Hard to believe this hasn't been polled.

I appreciate how NJR still sounds like demos lovingly assembled into monster jams.

"Billy Don't Lose My Number" is silly boringness and "Take Me Home" and "One More Night" dreary. But "Susudio" still kills.

I'm voting for "I Don't Wanna Know," which has a sick breakdown at the halfway point.

Oh "Long Long Way to Go," used to chilling effect in Miami Vice is Phil's only poignant tune about the homeless.

I've got a purist music fan friend who pretty much only listens to old scratchy 78s, and otherwise generally only jazz, give or take. On three separate occasions I've had this playing on low volume when he came over, but he hasn't said anything yet. Will keep you updated.

Anyway, Long Way to Go (with Sting) or Take Me Home (with Sting *and* Gabriel!).

I think about this post every time I see the No Jacket Required album cover

A bunch of people at school went to see Phil on the NJR tour and all turned up the next day in t-shirts with Phil's horrible sweaty baked-bean face on the front.

seriously though, has Phil ever said in an interview exactly what he was going for with that cover image? (aside from a continuation of the theme that all of his album covers feature a close up photo of his face- but why red/sweaty/sinister facial expression etc?)

soref, Sunday, 25 June 2017 20:32 (six years ago) link

I just listened to this album for the first time. I've known Sussudio for years, and the record's reputation for inspiring some of the worst drum production in music history. Gated reverb and all that. The record sucks, every song sounds the same, and Sussudio is the only one with any kind of hook. All the songs that follow are a weaker variation on Sussudio. They're completely lifeless, boring, and empty.

it's 2017 who has the energy to hate on gated drums ffs

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 25 June 2017 21:54 (six years ago) link

i don't hate gated drums. my favorite Hüsker Dü album is Flip Your Wig. i hate the monotony of this album, full of awful sounding rhythms and no melodies. i don't dislike Phil Collins but 42 minutes is a lot to spend with the man. too much for me.

IT can't be the same because "Long Long Way to Go" and "Take Me Home" don't sound like "Sussudio."
