A great 80s college rock song by New Jersey's sadly obscure Winter Hours

This probably doesn't count as it was in decent rotation on KROQ back in the day but it's totally missing from any playlist I've ever heard since.

For the people who thought Dave Gahan wasn't nasal enough! Pretty nice track.

Well this is a silly thread really but I was the queen of bizzarely getting into weird one hit wonder 80s acts back in the day, so:

Translator--Everywhere That I'm Not

This used to be on the radio and MTV. It's such a cool song, with an absolutely stupendous guitar riff.

Translator made one of the best best American new wave records ever. Their first album Heartbeats and Triggers (the one with 'Everywhere That I'm Not') is a personal classic.

The Sun Sawed In 1/2 - Denny's Girl

'90s midwestern powerpop. I guess people were too busy complaining about the criminal underratedness of Jellyfish and The Green Pajamas to give these guys a chance

Teresa Brewer and Don Cornell - "What Happened to the Music?"

Where Teresa Brewer and Don Cornell act like a couple of rockists and lament the state of music in 1953.

What happened to the music of not so long ago?
Where are the good old-fashioned songs we used to know?
I love to hear the music, but when they play it now
It's not the same somehow
And I just won't be happy
'Til I solve the mystery of
What happened to the music of love?

But the song really gets going at 1:06, when Teresa does a kind of "rap" thing where she openly disparages the pop music of the day:

Who gives a hoot about crawfish pies?
A boatload of shrimp where the stars get in your eyes
Tango's own that you can hold to dance to
Where are the songs we used to find romance to?
A doggie barking in the window
Mighty crazy sounds they use
I'd give a million dollars
For a good old-fashioned blues
Imagine kissing an old wild goose
Or trying to track a pack of horses on the loose
How can anyone be happy
While they let romance go out of style
And if nobody feels the way I do
The song I'm singing is the answer to
What happened to the music
What happened to the music
What happened to the music
Of love

Now I know that she's bashing Patti Page's "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" and all that talk about an old wild goose is probably referring to Frankie Laine's "The Old Wild Goose" but all the other stuff? I wouldn't know it! "Crawfish pies"?

Ha, that's amazing! "Crawfish pies"'d be a reference to Hank Williams' 1952 song "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)", probably, and the Howard/Weston's 1951 "Shrimp Boats" was recorded by a few people.

where the stars get in your eyes

this is a reference to Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes (and/or its answer record, "I Let the Stars Get in My Eyes")

I initially questioned Teresa Brewer's credentials, but given that her breakout hit was a novelty cod-dixieland number, I'll concede that she was as much of an authority on ye olde popular musick as anyone else alive. not so sure about Don Cornell...

trying to track a pack of horses on the loose

And this is a reference to Perry Como's "Wild Horses". Perry had also recorded "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes", so it appears that he embodied everything wrong with the state of pop music in 1953

^^^ which is amazing to me. I've told this elsewhere, but my dad was a youngster when Elvis hit. I asked him once why he never got bitten by the rock and roll bug, and he told me "because I always thought Perry Como was a better singer."
