i searched to see if we have already done this but it doesn't look like it.

have not heard this in ages and will dig out my old CD and play in the next couple of days.

Walk Away and Eleanor.. still genuinely great but the back half just merges into one blob of nothing-very-much. the gap between the decent songs and the rest is quite something. there's an *incredible* Best Of to be made of their 4 albums.

it's absolutely Do You Want To, but The Fallen is a close second

This sounds so much more muscular than the debut, tempted to vote either 'The Fallen' or 'Walk Away' ... I've never been convinced that 'Do You Want To' was the best choice for the first single.

I'm giving this another listen right now, and now I'm unsure what to vote for, it's really strong from beginning to end. I wonder how many people at the time were put off by the lead single or gave up on it after a couple of listens because it's not as immediate as the debut. The only song I wouldn't vote for is 'Fade Together', even though it's a charming little number.

the title track or "Outsiders"

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 July 2017 03:43 (six years ago) link

I've always thought this album was underrated, but it still feels far more of a consistent listen than I remember it being.

was not able to relisten today but plan to tomorrow.

Oh my I do not know this album! I think the only song I recognize is Do You Want To which I like but it doesn't hold a candle to the singles from the debut. Not voting but looking forward to the results to see if I missed this one as I think the debut is very strong.

love the soviet inspired artwork

Hah Turrican otm for me. The only song I know is the first single which felt like a diminishing return from the debut to me.

This album starts off so strong, voting "The Fallen."

"outsiders." this album is good

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 July 2017 11:53 (six years ago) link

In a way, it's a bit disappointing that Franz Ferdinand's popularity slid after the first record - given what British indie music had turned into by the back half of the decade (The View, The Kooks, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats and all that shite) all of their albums are light years ahead in terms of quality.

a guess we can say that this album is front loaded.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 01:01 (six years ago) link

We could, but the back half of this record is still quite strong, IMO.

Happy to see "Walk Away" take it but didn't expect it! Always thought of it as a classy "Scott Walker meets Sparks" break-up song but surprised to see it above the single and "Eleanor"(which got my vote)

bought this on cd on release, a relative disappointment but good to revisit

Walk Away is a great song and very indicative of the band's style - catchy hooks galore, fun musical changes, and that special FF melodic touch
