My new fav rapper brings life to a moribund genre scene: LA street rap

(ok that's an unfair descrip of LA street rap, Drakeo & frostydasnowmann have been doing interesting things w/in this framework but bear w/ me)

There's something v LA Max B about 03 Greedo, a 31-year-old ex con w/ a refined sense for melody & the range & variety surpassing his peers.

First song I heard was "Mafia Business" which i've been told was recorded on a "church microphone using garage band and recorded thru an internal mic on an old white Mac computer."

a tribute to mafia ray, a "LEGENDARY FIGURE" in California, featuring his kids in cameo appearances on the video, v heartfelt stuff, melodies fluttering like streamers in the breeze

then there's "Molly"

his songs tend not to rely on regionalisms of production instead reach for a sort of low-budget universality that lets his melodies or songwriting define them (a la max b again)

"Sweet Lady"

He has four albums so far & each is 30+ tracks long but I recommend starting w/ "Purple Summer" from last year (which each of these songs are off of)

Obv a commitment but its not the kind of thing where you have to dig for gems, his quality control is great, album tracks are as intriguing compositionally/content-wise as the "hits"

when i played this guy for Jordan he described it as (paraphrasing) v much "[deej] music" so depending on your tolerance for this stuff, you may or may not dig

have a feeling m@tt will feel it

I like this guy a lot but these tracks are *very* lo-fi, or at least they don't sound very good on Spotify (where I'm listening atm). I couldn't imagine what it would sound like if you tried to play them out.

I don’t really hear that? The first song I posted recorded in a church mic sure but otherwise it sounds fine

it's also cool that, although he's definitely got a good sense of hook and catchy melodies (get the max b comparisons) he can switch it up with some really good and should skillful conventional rapping too

did an EP length playlist of 'essential' 03 greedo cuts (just eight tracks), a mix of obvious essentials and a couple personal favs
