been waiting for this... PB has this & another EP coming out in 2018, along with a tour. all songs written on the road during AC's Painting With tour.

Limited 12” vinyl only EP from Noah Lennox, a.k.a. Panda Bear

A1. Flight
A2. Part of the Math
B1. Shepard Tone
B2. Nod to the Folks
B3. Sunset

It's been my perception that these things tend to homogenize experience so I hope you’ll forgive me if I don’t outline, in any specific way, the many choices involved in its creation. I appreciate your role as filter or translator, and by withholding my own blueprints for the album, I mean to encourage and cultivate your part in its trip.

There are, however, a couple of things I think might easily go unnoticed without mention, and the existence of these things, I'd wager, are important to the music's success.

The songs aren’t lyrically linear or narrative as such, though I did scatter pieces of longer-chewed themes across the tracks. I find they still work satisfactorily alone, but strengthen each other’s messages when combined.

It's not often anymore I find something specific to my life that feels worthwhile setting to song for others to consume. It’s a tough sell convincing myself that my own troubles warrant as much attention as those we all share. The strokes of the messages themselves are broad enough, then, that I think anybody can find a familiar face, if they care to look.

I hoped to make something without frills or much embellishment, principally because I’ve found more fluff tends to equal less power. Since the juiciest action is entirely focused in the deeper zones of the frequency spectrum (at least from where I’ve sat), power was key.

The lion’s share of the noise is centered, or nearly, so both speakers get a taste. This is another nod towards power, but it also means HOMIES doesn’t work in the same way through headphones as it does out in the air.

My greatest hope with this stuff is for it to live like my favorite songs do, which is to say like comforts or companions. Thank you very much for listening and I hope "A Day With the Homies" can mean something to you.

My best to you and yours.

Noah

Man, i wish he would change direction from this electric stuff. It's been a slow downhill trip since Person Pitch imo

Meets the Grim Reaper is easily his best record

Meets the Grim Reaper is easily his best record

I went back to Grim Reaper following this thread and it's much better than I remembered.
Some pretty funky beats and nice hooks.
the production is a bit too basic/samey, though (I don't know if he'll ever get over the ott reverb/delay fx on his voice...).

I still think Tomboy is great. I'm a bit allergic to a lot of AC-based stuff these days, but that album is solid

that desert daze set doesn't have much reverb on the vocals.
xp

mizzell, Monday, 27 November 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

he tends to ladle it on in the studio, "Tropic of Cancer" for example... although much of the "delay" on PBVSGR is vocal hocketting (the ping pong delivery on Boys Latin)

I think it’s a typical trick from songwriters who are not singers deep down. They try to cover it up with various fx.
That said it’s totally subjective since a great singer like Lennon was very uncomfortable with his voice and kept trying to find new ways to change it in production...

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 27 November 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

that's true for a lot of people and certainly many of AC's peers & ripoff artists but PB is a legitimately great singer, he's classically trained & was in choir throughout high school, & his second solo album Young Prayer is "is very classically influenced. All the weird baroque flourishes and stuff in terms of the way I’m singing. And that was definitely intentional, I set out to do something that sounded like that."

Avey Tare's singing is more comparable to Lennon imo. also the reverb on "Tropic of Cancer" isn't that saturated, tbh it reminds me of Frank Sinatra recordings. that song is probably the best display of his singing abilities besides the Young Prayer album.

oh I didn't say he's a bad singer.
I don't find him great as I feel he lacks emotion, intensity and variations but it's ok for what he does (I mostly get tired of his production choices for his voice actually. Like listening to a whole album is difficult).
It's more that I think maybe HE thinks he's not a good singer, hence the fx, etc.
I agree about Avey Tare being more a Lennon voice to PB's more Macca.

ah gotcha, sorry for misunderstanding. curious to see how he treats the vocals on this new ep. everyone that's asked him about it after shows over the past year has relayed the message that the songs on this ep (and the one coming later in 2018) are very stripped down, dry, and simple. hopefully that applies to the vocals, i'd like to hear a more direct approach. the desert daze set is great but the AC's live shows usually aren't a good predictor of how the songs will sound on a record.
