Best of the Bauhaus-affiliated bands

I was listening to "**** (Jungle Law)" and reflecting on how much I dig practically everything this particular set of musicians touched. Then, I started asking myself which my favorite was, which made me start wondering what other people's favorite was, so I made this poll. Have fun talking up your favorites!

Also, if you want to yell at me for leaving out The Jazz Butcher and Messy, go nuts.

Love and Rockets

flappy bird, Monday, 27 November 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

I'm not really a bauhaus fan but i love "performance" by tones on tail so i am voting for them

brimstead, Monday, 27 November 2017 18:52 (six years ago) link

Love and Rockets probably has the best overall catalog but I can't think of anything from the subsequent bands that is as full-on bonkers as "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash"

Also, if you don't know "Christian Says" by Tones on Tail, track that down immediately.

Dalis Car holds such a special place in my heart, and is unlike anything else outside of Mark Karn's solo work, that it has my vote.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 13:19 (six years ago) link

it's a tie between L&R and ToT. but i voted for L&R anyway. Both original U.K. debut LPs (Pop and SDOTH) are way up there for me. as far up there as any Bauhaus and i love Bauhaus. (but not the u.s. version of pop with go and twist on it as much as i love those songs and not the stupid american version of 7th dream which was stupid. also could vote for L&R just for kundalini express alone. also, i always figured that peter murphy solo fans were bigger fans of david sylvian and marc almond solo albums than i was. meaning: i don't own any of them.)

scott seward, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 14:05 (six years ago) link

nice call to ignore daniel ash solo too. which is mostly spoon-moon-june lazy and makes even jason spaceman spoon-moon-june lazy or jesus & mary chain spoon-moon-june lazy look wide awake by comparison. which is saying something.

Hi there!

Yeah Daniel solo should be in there as an option but the first album was the keeper.

I really can't speak with any kind of clarity on this given I saw Poptone earlier in the year and am seeing Mr Murphy at least six times in the next couple of months -- and with David J at one of those shows. Bauhaus casts the longest shadow by default. Ultimately I appreciate the entire melange, and I suppose Love and Rockets gets the win just because they were my entry point to it all with "No New Tale to Tell."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 14:29 (six years ago) link

I won't vote because I only know Bauhaus, Tones On Tail and Dalis Car (and I like all of them a lot) but of those it's clearly Bauhaus for me. I actually only heard Dalis Car for the first time this year because I came across the album cheap in a record shop in town so I downloaded it to see if it was any good, discovered it was good and went back and bought it.

I probably listen to L&R the most, and there have been points in my life when I thought that I could get rid of my entire record collection except for Express and be relatively content. Trying to look at it objectively I think Bauhaus might be the greater achievement though.

We POLL Our Audience: You, The Night and The Music - BAUHAUS - Love and Rockets, Tones on Tail, Peter Murphy etcetera - ILM artist poll number 73 - results thread

as most of you know i ran the above poll a couple of years back. it was split right down the middle as i got the same amount of Bauhaus votes as i did for the solo stuff or Love and Rockets, Tones on Tail, Peter Murphy ect. on the solo side Love and Rockets did dominate except for the first few slots which went to Tones on Tail deservedly.

the thing that i have noticed since i ran that poll is i only play the Bauhaus Spotify, as it really does tower over the rest and gets my vote.

Why is Bauhaus an option in the poll?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 30 November 2017 05:49 (six years ago) link

but if it's an option then it's:

Bauhaus > Tones on Tail > Love and Rockets > Peter Murphy

I don't think I've even heard anything by these:

David J
Dalis Car
The Bubblemen
Poptone

Am I missing out on anything?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 30 November 2017 05:52 (six years ago) link

Bauhaus > Tones on Tail > Love and Rockets > Peter Murphy

Exactly how I rank them too. They are all great, but Bauhaus just has that synergy and rawness and pure fearlessness that was never quite matched in other incarnations. Tones On Tail gets closest.

I don't think Poptone has any original material. It's Ash, Haskins and his daughter doing Bauhaus, ToT and L&R songs on tour.

I kinda think you either love Dalis Car or hate it. I think the music is exquisite:

poor david j.

stirmonster, Friday, 1 December 2017 02:51 (six years ago) link

It amuses me..

They apparently would appear at Love&Rockets gigs and mooch around to backing tapes. Wonder how that went down with the Goths..

Mark G, Friday, 1 December 2017 06:55 (six years ago) link

the goths loved it.

stirmonster, Friday, 1 December 2017 10:08 (six years ago) link

i saw it and wrote about it in the L&R part of the poll. The Bubblemen opened for them at a gig i saw in Long Beach. losts of strobe lights.

six years pass...

yeah, big oof re:david j. i like his albums quite a bit. granted, not more than tones on tail or earth sun moon, but his brand of whimsical jangle is exactly my bag.

anyway wanted to post a remix from one of his early 2000s singles and found it wasn't anywhere online. so fuckit: had to up it to the tube—

david j — "the auteur (thievery corporation remix)" (2002)

very much cliche early 2000s chillout room bait, but who cares: classic breakbeats under fake tablas and faux nasheed. i like that sort of thing. also one of my fav thievery corp productions.

David J is the ideal "second voice" as both songwriter and singer on the Love and Rockets albums - while Daniel Ash goes for the pop songs and the big statements, J hangs back and comments thoughtfully. Can't say I've been particularly inspired to seek out his solo work as a result, though I do remember pleasure seeing the video for "I'll Be Your Chauffeur" late one night.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 10 December 2023 18:28 (four months ago) link

i guess i'd classify his albums as basically jangle pop. "i'll be your chauffeur" is quite representative, tbh. if you like that one, crocodile tears and the glass singles compilation are pretty satisfying, tho not going to change anyone's mind about him.

Yeah I like his general bent, it's always rewarding when I do a random listen. Some real strange/interesting obscurities early on too, like the collaboration he did with an actual member of the Bauhaus school, Rene Halkett:

And of course his collaborative EP with Alan Moore released I believe in concert with the respective issue of V for Vendetta (in the relevant issue V performs this song at a piano)

The collection of archival home recordings out on Independent Project Records looks great but alas was only a limited edition RSD vinyl release, at least so far:

Surpisingly, Tones on Tail is on the bill for the Cruel World festival next May in Pasadena.

It's really just Poptone; Glenn Campling said it was okay to use the name. And nothing wrong with Poptone, they do a great job with the material!

Nope: Warrior #12 came out August 1983 (headlined by the debut of Bojeffries Saga, This Vicious Cabaret the fourth of five features), melody credited to David Jay; the EP April 1984 with no additional Moore contributions.

The DC shrunken-and-colourised-and-collected issue #4 came out in December 1988.

For more substantial collaborations with Moore, see his spoken-word-with-music pieces The Birth Caul (one of the best things Moore ever did) and The Moon And Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre Of Marvels.

Ah yeah, I see it's Ash, Haskins and Diva Dompe.

I really want to go to this, mostly because I have never seen Blondie and I don't want to miss my chance.

David J.'s album Crocodile Tears and the Velvet Cosh is outstanding. Very much worth a listen.

Of the post-Bauhaus acts, I'd say Murphy has had the best output overall. He's also a much better live act than L&R. Danny Ash did damage my hearing about 15 years ago.
