Billboard Modern Rock #1 Hits of 2017

The annual alternative rundown. Fewer songs than usual hit #1, likely due to "Feel it Still," the new record-holder on this chart with 20 weeks at #1, displacing Muse's 2012 #1 "Madness" (19 weeks). The rest of the 2017 list is an odd mix, with some Top 40 crossovers, indie tracks, and alt-rock mainstays. 23 years after their first #1s, Green Day and Beck continue to top the chart; those 23-year spans might be a record as well.

Voted Beck, but half of this I really can't stand (Rag & Bone Man, Judah & the Lion, Imagine Dragons).

LimbsKing, Friday, 15 December 2017 17:53 (six years ago) link

The only ones of these I've heard are the Imagine Dragons ones, and they are turrble.

PTM seems like Hot Chip for normies.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link

i think the green day song on this list is their best single in like 2000 (light) years so i'm gonna vote for that

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

Oh wait, I have heard that Green Day song (they play it on the iHeart app a lot in commercials). I'm ambivalent.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 18:17 (six years ago) link

flappy bird, Friday, 15 December 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

i liked the first few singles from revolution radio tho so it's probably good

flappy bird, Friday, 15 December 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

These are all shite.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Friday, 15 December 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link

that's one of the better new beck songs too

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 15 December 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

legit many of the worst radio hits on any format were on alternative this year. "wish i knew you" is kinda cute though, guess i'll vote that.

dyl, Friday, 15 December 2017 21:09 (six years ago) link

an interesting and sometimes confusing thing about the format nowadays imo is that classic hits (centered on the 90s) seem to be taking up more and more of the stations' playlists nowadays but the current hits still do often have good prospects for crossover to top 40. ("active rock" seems to be in a similar situation, except 99% of its currents have zero crossover potential.) it's basically becoming a new adult contemporary format that favors male performers even more than mainstream and hot ac do.

The 2016 modern rock list was pretty brutal and not in a good way. I'm going to take a shot. Kind of hard to avoid the Rag'n Bone Man track as it's been used on TV a bunch, so that one I know. I've heard that Beck tune on NPR. Curious to see if I have heard any of the others.

Judah and the Lion "Take it All Back" -- What a mash. Not my thing, but I can see why some people like it. It's kind of like old 80s jangle rock with some modern software and a 90s geeky sing rap section. Would the Toad the Wet Sprocket sound like this now?

Green Day - "Still Breathing" -- Hadn't heard this one, it was better than I expected. It would have sounded better with a band playing in a room sound than that software soaked stuff.

Lumineers - "Cleopatra" -- Yeah I have heard this one on WUKY. It is pleasant. The stripped down sound works.

Rag'n'Bone Man - "Human"-- It's a catchy tune and the guy can sing. Curious to see if the guy will be a one big hit wonder. It's kinda setup to be a tv show theme like that one Alabama 3 tune.

When I first watched the Portugal. The Man. video, I realized I had heard it a bunch but always thought it was Selena Gomez.

After listening to them all, this is easily the Revivalists - a song I already knew and genuinely like.

There's something vaguely reminiscent of Doobie Brothers/Steely Dan about it (although I realize it's probably more Maroon 5 than anything).

lmfaoooo selena gomez
