Superorganism - Everybody wants to be famous

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 23:01 (two months ago) Permalink

That's the only single that has been released around my radar in the past two days.

And yes! I've started a playlist this year too for you all to laugh about my taste:

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 23:03 (two months ago) Permalink

New Tuneyards song “heartattack” is good. One of my favorite ones I’ve heard from them. Also Karen O and Michael Kiwanuka collab for Kenzo is good.

Also new US Girls single. And an Alan Vega cover by soft moon of juxebox babe, not as great as the original but still I have a soft spot for covers of songs I love.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 11 January 2018 21:05 (two months ago) Permalink

really hitting the spot.. recalls autechre, the good stuff, et al

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 12 January 2018 19:16 (two months ago) Permalink

I've also started on my 2018 playlist, tho I reserve the right to remove things

Simon H., Friday, 12 January 2018 20:02 (two months ago) Permalink

Can we possibly separate tracks and albums this year? I like to trawl through the thread and it makes it difficult to do.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 January 2018 20:03 (two months ago) Permalink

this is an album

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Sunday, 14 January 2018 10:21 (two months ago) Permalink

Can a mod edit title so it says tracks/songs and remove albums?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 14 January 2018 18:04 (two months ago) Permalink

Belle Adair's "The Absentee," from Tuscumbia, out on Single Lock this month. Kinda Bert Sommer-y Big Star.

Badgers (dog latin), Thursday, 18 January 2018 14:21 (two months ago) Permalink

So... was there a separate albums thread or are we mixing it up?

niels, Thursday, 18 January 2018 18:22 (two months ago) Permalink

into "rchmöd" now.. these guys are so many things i love about autechre

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Thursday, 18 January 2018 21:03 (two months ago) Permalink

I'm not sold on the album as a whole but 'One Rizia' by Shame is a keeper:

Dinsdale, Friday, 19 January 2018 21:35 (two months ago) Permalink

Mods ignored my title change request so... albums and tracks in this thread it seems :/

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 January 2018 22:03 (two months ago) Permalink

One thread for albums and tracks is more than enough. I'll throw in some faves soon. My spotify playlist already has about 50 things in it.

Jeff W, Saturday, 20 January 2018 14:43 (two months ago) Permalink

Agreed. This thread has been perfectly fine for umpteen years.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 20 January 2018 15:39 (two months ago) Permalink

Favourite thing so far is the Pantsula! comp of late 80s South African dance music. I'm far from an expert but I hear early house, Italo, Shangaan sounds. Cover is some notable album art too:

New Nils Frahm is excellent

groovypanda, Friday, 26 January 2018 14:21 (one month ago) Permalink

i'd say the new nils frahm is allright, not more. as the title says quite melodic. easy listening background stuff.

Frequently find James Blake’s music boring but his new song is glitchy and chopped up and I love glitchy and chopped up.

^ i did make a fairly useless thread about peggy gou but i have not been able to shake this one track. classic larry heard-ish house business combined with the same sort of lovely breezy pop sensibilities as someone like dip in the pool

btw that's Peggy Gou - It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)

That has 33 more tracks than my tracks list! My albums list is just:

Various Artists - Pantsula! The Rise Of Electronic Dance Music In South Africa 1988-1990 [sounds like shangaan x Italo x early house everyone should love this]
Fire! - The Hands [free jazz good times]
Weirdest Dream - White Worms [yr standard analog synth explorations always a treat]

Another fan of that Pantsula comp here

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 11:52 (one month ago) Permalink

We seem to be in a golden age of African music compilations right now. I'll need to give the Pantsula a good listen. I am also really really enjoying the 'Sweet As Broken Dates' comp of Somalian music on Ostinato at the moment.

Badgers (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 February 2018 12:04 (one month ago) Permalink

that Fire! track is nice, like their combination of heavy grooves and free spirits

I really like Atletico but the first couple of tracks of the album proper weren't really doing it for me. I'm convinced to give it another go.

evol j, Friday, 9 February 2018 18:58 (one month ago) Permalink

Getting really addicted to Mor Mor - Heaven’s Only Wishful
I have a soft spot for songs that are sung continously low key and monotonic until the end where the singer starts sing-shouts. Selena Gomez Bad Liar did this too.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 9 February 2018 22:37 (one month ago) Permalink

This Rae Morris album is wallpaper.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 9 February 2018 22:51 (one month ago) Permalink

The two Helena Deland singles and the two Amen Dunes singles released so far are great. I think those two + US Girls are pointing out to be my favorite albums in the first quarter of 2018.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 15 February 2018 19:28 (one month ago) Permalink

"Dark Oscillations" by Loma is pretty trippy-- spacious production, choral effects, almost proggy feeling. I think younger Hunt3r would deem this cheesy, but not now. Entire album is beautifully assembled.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 17:08 (one month ago) Permalink

That Loma album is great. Recommend you to listen the albums from the bands forming it: Cross Record and Shearwater. The former in particular (wabi sabi) is amazing.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 20 February 2018 17:16 (one month ago) Permalink

thx! i'm psyched to check that Cross Record album.

monthly update:

The year is still young but I highly doubt anything will beat this one, or even come close: Camp Cope - How to Socialise & Make Friends

Alela Diane - Cusp

Marisa Anderson - Cloud Corner

Dinsdale, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:14 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Marisa Anderson reminds me of Adrian Legg a little bit, w/o all the fucking around with the tuning knobs.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:21 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Favourite albums:

Mgmt - little dark age
Ionnalee - everyone afraid to be forgotten
First aid kit - ruins
Us girls new one

Year feels young but four great albums by march isn't bad

I'm not sure how much anyone cares about French music around here but I really like the new album by this band called Feu! Chatterton. It's kind of hard to describe, it fits the nouvelle chanson française descriptor I guess, sounds a bit Gainsbourg-y in a few places, singer kinda overdoes the romantic/sad Parisian poet thing at times but I don't mind. Here's "Souvenir", give it a shot:

Also enjoying the new Eric Chenaux album which is available to stream over at The Quietus:

Dinsdale, Sunday, 11 March 2018 20:11 (one week ago) Permalink

With the new album, I think Young Fathers have now moved into my all-time top 200 artists.
They're so primitive, so lo-fi, and yet so stylish and layered and lush.
Not mind blowing, just consistently fine.
