Wouldn't have enjoyed this album half as much had he not absolutely blown me away live.

so 15 ilx0rs saw him live last year I guess

I've never really listened to the sort of late 90s Sasha & Digweed style pristeen prog-house that the Bicep album is apparently referencing, but every time I listen to it I find myself thinking quite how naff and unfashionable it would have been in the mid-00s. Not that it isn't highly enjoyable, but it could probably do with pruning in the middle. That said, when you get out of the boring mid-album drift, especially the moment where the Indian film soundtrack sample kicks in during Rain, it's pure hands-in-the-air stuff right to the end.

front to back gr8 album

gr8080, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:03 (six years ago) link

I have listened to this album a lot this year it's fun I don't have an overarching theory

bizarrer Gandhara (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:04 (six years ago) link

Fun fact I wish I'd never discovered on New Year's Eve, if you watch some godforsaken Michael McIntyre stand-up dross with the volume down while Bad & Boujee is playing it links up perfectly, Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz style.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:06 (six years ago) link

I'm guessing this has put paid to the Future S/T appearing anywhere because no way is that record higher than this.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:06 (six years ago) link

Surprised the destroyer album made it. I expected it to maybe place in the 40s. I voted for this. Feels less ambitious than his previous albums so more easily dismissed, but I think this is probably a top 5 destroyer album.

silverfish, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:06 (six years ago) link

Too low! Way too low :( Was sure this was going to be in the top 10.

Frederik B, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:07 (six years ago) link

The only album this year that felt like the perfection of a musical language.

omg

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:27 (six years ago) link

ken is a significant step down from the previous two albums, some nice moments, but mostly feels phoned in and generally lacking spark.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:30 (six years ago) link

It's a step down and not unpleasant – it's the smoothest nothing since an '80 Bryan Ferry album.

wow, what is this????

Jeff W, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:34 (six years ago) link

Two of my votes in a row. Was so glad to have another GAS record.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:35 (six years ago) link

yeah! posted in amother thread but was absolutely stoked to see him last year and didn't disappoint

nxd, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:35 (six years ago) link

wow something I voted for!!

(the blues version in his Broadway show) (crüt), Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:36 (six years ago) link

probly my favourite record listened to this year. like all of the Gas albums, you have to live with it for a while before it really lets you have it. it sounds great straightaway of course but it's the moment when you're listening 3 months later and say 6 suddenly reveals itself as this ecstatic, endless single drone and you're like "yeah this is my music"

bizarrer Gandhara (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:36 (six years ago) link

i gotta revisit this one because after two listens it just made me start listening to his 90’s stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

gr8080, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:36 (six years ago) link

probs prefer the previous three records but narkopop is still so satisfying

nxd, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:37 (six years ago) link

the continuous single-track version of this >>>>>>

sophistipop 2 (stritram), Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:37 (six years ago) link

presumably the continuous version is the unavailable "track 11" on Spotify?

Oh this is on Kompakt. Which reminds me that I should have nominated Total 17, which was a big step back up to past glories.

Jeff W, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:43 (six years ago) link

yay wolfgang! was cut from my ballot at the very last minute so glad to see it place

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:45 (six years ago) link

odd future wolfgang lull them all

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:46 (six years ago) link

lmao

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:49 (six years ago) link

3 of my picks in a row!

migos, destroyer and bicep

bicep is some great 90s chunky maximalism

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:50 (six years ago) link

The GAS record was always going to place given what's elsewhere in this poll and seeing him do this stuff live was one of my best musical experiences of last year.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link

sorry i can't listen to migos without feeling varying levels of hatred, it just isn't for me, idk, they're just too raucously priapic and the next time i hear someone go 'scroot scroot!' i swear to god

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 14:06 (six years ago) link
