PALM my new favorite band

saw them open for Girlpool a couple months ago and they completely blew me away. they opened with this song: https://soundcloud.com/carparkrecords/palm-composite
can't think of any other band formed in the last 5 years that's as exciting to me as Palm. extremely tight adventurous & bold art rock that reminds me of u.s. maple, deerhoof, don cab, talking heads, devo, ponytail, the usaisamonster, mid-era animal collective, & bitte orca, without being retro or entirely familiar at all. finally a band moving forward

Kinda reminded me of early 2000s Of Montreal

in that video at the top of the thread, they stop playing and the host starts talking about their intricate style, rhythmic aptitude, how their practices work - all stuff i would be interested in hearing about. but then he just never asks a question about any of that stuff and moves on to "did you record the Ep in Philly" and "how's the tour going?"

:(

Would be fun to play in a band like this. Rehearsals would be cool.

p4k review maddeningly tepid. they gave it a 6.8 https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/palm-rock-island/

Similarly, Kurt will likely always sound a little like Avey Tare

accurate

(who, in turn, will always sound a little like Brian Wilson).

jesus christ why is this still a music crit crutch re: AC, neither of them sound anything like Brian Wilson

flappy bird, Friday, 9 February 2018 19:51 (eight months ago) Permalink

the beach boys had an incredibly distinct vocal harmony sound, i don't think there's anything like it, the way they sang together and the blend of their voices

It's not delivery, it's Adorno! (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 9 February 2018 19:56 (eight months ago) Permalink

right, so now anyone that uses multi-layered harmonies = sounds like the beach boys. this is a canard that has been parroted unchallenged for over a decade

flappy bird, Friday, 9 February 2018 19:58 (eight months ago) Permalink

idk, on person pitch panda bear sounds like the dude who sang "sloop john b". a lot of that album sounds like a mirage of the verse of sloop john b

brimstead, Friday, 9 February 2018 20:01 (eight months ago) Permalink

I've tried and honestly have just never heard the similarity, then again I saw the dress as white and gold and still do fwiw

flappy bird, Friday, 9 February 2018 20:03 (eight months ago) Permalink

fwiw when this thread first appeared i went and listened to the first three or so album tracks and thought "sounds like ELO covering the beach boys"
