no morse code surprise this time? or would the ticking in the beginning mean something?

Mesarthim has changed their profile picture on March 12th...

they're still active + maybe there's something new on the way?

StanM, Thursday, 21 March 2019 17:57 (five years ago) link

two weeks pass...

That new logo (here as well: https://mesarthim.bandcamp.com/ ) must mean something (they previous clues & the secret album were all morse code) though: there are lines missing, the number of dashes... But what?
Maybe they're telling us where to look for something? Maybe it's a release date?

second half of this, at least at work which is the worst place for paying attention to music, seemed WONDERFUL

Jeff Treppel just now raving about it on Twitter. Clearly a sign.

They're one of the first four acts in Bandcamp's vinyl pressing program:

Yeah this new one is good stuff.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 April 2019 03:10 (five years ago) link

Since lhotr.org, the original url that was hidden in the morse code at the end of The Density Parameter doesn't work anymore, I guess we can talk about it?

It sent you to this, which they seemingly uploaded in 2016 - https://lhotr.bandcamp.com/releases

And it's great! In an early Mesarthim kinda way (you immediately hear it's them but also how much they've evolved since then)

Listening! Already sounds more...terrestrial than their usual output. Intriguing!

imago, Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:08 (three years ago) link

yes there are riffs that do not sound beamed in from another dimension

not sure I like it tbh

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:17 (three years ago) link

yeah, it's the same, but different

StanM, Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:19 (three years ago) link

Nothing against these guys but I have no idea why they deserve their own thread ahead of worthier active metal bands such as [redacted].

pomenitul, Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:23 (three years ago) link

They're kind of sui generis?

imago, Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:24 (three years ago) link

StanM, Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:26 (three years ago) link

hmm, the latest track has turned into a slightly underwhelming remix of the end of The Great Filter

imago, Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:36 (three years ago) link

Their forays into mid 90s symphonic trance kitsch kinda ruin the stately cosmic mood for me and their Heroes of Might Magic III synth lines are often too crude and winky to be thoroughly hYpNoTiC. If we're sticking to the same astronomical turf, I prefer Progenie Terrestre Pura.

Anyway, I usually like their stuff well enough while it's playing so I'm a graysayer more than a naysayer.

pomenitul, Thursday, 6 August 2020 13:40 (three years ago) link

oooh, morse code at the end again.

StanM, Friday, 7 August 2020 06:04 (three years ago) link

I feel like they may sound different because they're using different recording software or microphones or something but the music is pretty much as great as ever imho

StanM, Sunday, 9 August 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

!!!!!

StanM, Thursday, 13 August 2020 06:32 (three years ago) link

they're evolving/playing with their own format a bit + some of the riffs are variations from earlier songs. I still love it though

StanM, Thursday, 13 August 2020 20:12 (three years ago) link

I think I prefer this to the new full-length

StanM, Saturday, 27 May 2023 09:34 (ten months ago) link

I love this band and the new one is just as cosmic as expected though some of the heavier parts makes its way into Deafheaven's transitional stuff, kinda.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Saturday, 27 May 2023 21:30 (ten months ago) link

I’ve been playing this pretty much nonstop and I absolutely love it. My favourite is ‘Arrival Pt 6’. Does anyone know what the Morse code spells out? By the way, I love the Morse code breakdown in that song!

Kodanshi, Sunday, 28 May 2023 21:15 (ten months ago) link

FYI for anyone wondering: it's after 58 seconds (and again a bit later in the track) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ta-lfOmDmQ

the beep beep beep morse code is KONVAS AVTOMAT, the camera used to make the first images of Earth from outer space

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konvas
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gherman_Titov
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vostok_2

but what are the guitars doing? are they playing another morse code at the same time?

StanM, Monday, 29 May 2023 15:09 (ten months ago) link

I think they’re doing a breakdown to the rhythm of the Morse Code itself. Note that the guitars even ‘stutter’ (through delay/programming) to keep in time with the beeps.

I absolutely love it though. Thanks for translating it, by the way.
