Rank and File

Two of my favorite albums from the 80s were "Sundown" and "Long Gone Dead" by Rank and File, but they've never been released on CD. I hear Rhino has the rights -- how come they won't put them out? Lesser roots rock bands from the same period, such as the Beat Farmers and the Long Ryders, are readily available on CD.

both those albums are brilliant.

Are you dissing the Long Ryders? Wanna fight?

I'm a big sucker for Rank & File's eponymous third album where they went a little Def Leppard. And I loved Blackbird, though the albums haven't aged really well.

The lost LA 80s roots CLASSIC is The Romans' "Last Days At The Ranch".

Yeah, the third one blew. Seems like only yesterday . . .

The Everlys did a decent version of "Amanda Ruth," by the way . . .

yeah, "Amanda Ruth" is my favorite song by them, and I've heard the EB's version. Need to hear it again...I'm way into those Collectors Choice Everlys reissues, just got the "Sings Country" CD yesterday.

Used to see them play a lot when they lived in New York. They were great, so much better live than the albums ended up being.

twelve years pass...

Two Rank and File threads, 11 posts in total, none in 12 years. They've hit a dry patch.

A friend was giving away some albums he didn't want, so I took Long Gone Dead and a few others, not really sure if I already had it. I didn't--just the first one. It's surprisingly okay--"brilliant"'s a bit of a reach (sorry Long Gone Andy, whoever you are), but "Sound of the Rain" and the title track are both good. Actually thought it was a female voice singing the latter, but I guess not.

the dils hold up better for me than rank and file, who i respect more than i actually like.

There was a more general thread that I think Scott S started that had some mentions of Rank & File. I have Long Gone Dead and like it quite a bit, I do prefer the Dils though. Sound of the Rain is an old Dils song they redid.

2002 Andy was right about Sundown at least, it really is brilliant. I'd put it alongside the Dils' studio recordings, which I guess is saying a lot since their eight (8!) song non-live discography is pretty much perfect.

they were goodlooking boys, Chip (the blond w/ the high voice) angelically so.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 01:28 (six years ago) link

Yeah the Chip tunes make me swoon. They're also the ones where the band's version of country music has the most in common with the Meat Puppets'. Were the Kirkwoods fans of the Kinmans?

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 03:28 (six years ago) link

There was a Hinman career overview in the last Ugly THings.

I thought the Meat Puppets were way too maverick to consciously sound much like another band. Could it be the other way round?

& I thought i had a cd of Rank & File material that I'd picked up late 90s. Not sure if it still plays.

The touring version of Rank and File with Junior Brown on guitar was pure fire. I wonder if they were ever recorded.
