Volume 9 casts its net over three years, bringing in a pioneering Techno classic, a future superstar of stage and screen, a sporting anthem from one of the Worst People In The World, and concludes with us crashing into 1973 with the 45 edit of perhaps the signature FM Rock instrumental.

(Gary Glitter missing (!) and I'm suspicious of "Beautiful Sunday")

In live performances of the song, Edgar Winter further pioneered the advancement of the synthesizer as a lead instrument by becoming the first person ever to strap a keyboard instrument around his neck, giving him the on-stage mobility and audience interaction of guitar players.

A couple of volumes ago, I posted that there was good stuff on the way. I don't know what I was thinking of--I looked ahead again last night, and in fact you're headed into a vast K-Tel wasteland. A couple of upcoming volumes are definitive on that front; this one, with "Brandy," "Beautiful Sunday," "Popcorn," Lobo, and Gallery, is close.

"Thunder and Lightning"'s proto-disco still sounds pretty good.

clemenza, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 17:16 (five years ago) link

I kind of like both Lobo songs that we've heard so far. Is that weird?

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 17:17 (five years ago) link

No. I tend to use "K-Tel" as an unambiguous pejorative, a kind of shorthand, but it's more complicated than that.

clemenza, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 17:23 (five years ago) link

I mean, "Popcorn"'s interesting--I used it as a point of comparison for "Inspector Norse" a few years ago.

ugh, Gary Glitter: "Rock & Roll Pt. 2":

Daniel Boone: "Beautiful Sunday" (for comparison--if the Spotify is a rerecord, it's pretty close):

Have heard half of these. "Popcorn" and "Frankenstein" could well have got my vote if Gary Glitter hadn't been there.

Voted for the obvious frontrunner

3-Way Tie (For James Last) (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 17:31 (five years ago) link

Never heard the Rick Springfield (man out of season), I don't think Cashman & West, either. Austin Roberts, I'm not sure--he had a bigger hit, I think.

I believe there was a YTMND with popcorn playing over the ORLY owl

I remember getting this one from the library as a kid and the combination of "Popcorn," "Rock & Roll Part 2" and "Clair" blew my mind.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link

This volume is an exemplar of the K-Tel mix: AM pop, one-hit wonders, enjoyably dumb shit, horrid "how was this a hit?" pieces of crap. And "Brandy" is the perfect K-Tel song.

Hideous Lump, Thursday, 26 July 2018 03:43 (five years ago) link

^OTM. And given K-Tel's 22 Dynamic Hits Vol.2 was the first LP I ever owned (Christmas 1972 present from an aunt and uncle), I'm not minding this a bit right now.

"Sylvia's Mother", "Popcorn", "Brandy" and the other version of "Son Of My Father" are all on that LP.

Jeff W, Thursday, 26 July 2018 09:39 (five years ago) link

This might be my favourite Volume of the series so far, actually. Chi Coltrane, Lobo and Gallery were all new to me but all good. The first part of the Cashman & West thing was also OK, the second less so.

Voted "Frankenstein". Edgar Winter must have had a sore neck after that (awesome) OGWT performance.

Jeff W, Saturday, 28 July 2018 19:32 (five years ago) link

I get the feeling that Cashman & West track is partially here to make up for the absence of "American Pie", which had to be one of the white whales for the compliers.

I really really hate “Rock and Roll Part 2” and what the fuck is it even doing on here? This isn’t fucking Jock Jams.

And “Rock and Roll Part 2” is the quintessential 90s track.
