This one took me longer to get into at the time. But now there's been a few days over the years where I might say I like it better than the debut.

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 05:19 (five years ago) link

the tension and release on children in bloom is hitting me rn.

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 05:55 (five years ago) link

have you seen me lately really moves. think the back half of that song is among the best sounds they ever put together. cmon color me in.

The vocal harmonies/layering on daylight fading are very nice. overall i dont like the production on this as much as the first album. listened to a pod with duritz yesterday and he said the opposite, said he loves the first record but doesnt like the production as much compared to their later records.

I dated someone who was an obsessive CC fan back then, so I heard this album many times, and even saw them live, yet I can't recall anything about it.

This is such a great record.

Voting for "I'm Not Sleeping".

cwkiii, Friday, 10 August 2018 02:10 (five years ago) link

"daylight fading" and "another horsedreamer's blues" are just gold and i'm not even sure i can say they're the best tracks. great re-evaluation album.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 10 August 2018 05:40 (five years ago) link

classic album front to back. honestly difficult not to vote for "angels" but this might be "another horsedreamer's blues"

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 10 August 2018 05:45 (five years ago) link

This album had a fantastic flow. Always loved the “Monkey”/“Mercury” lead up to the Courtney Cox track.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 10 August 2018 05:57 (five years ago) link

lmao @ referrring to "a long december" as "the courtney cox track"

i love that song it is so deeply sad for something that was constantly on the radio

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 10 August 2018 06:00 (five years ago) link

long december. I hate this band but I do love that song. My father died the december around the time this album was released so it reminds me of that.

separate poll for most ridiculous moment in the "daylight fading" music video (correct answer is the jar of fireflies wearing headphones).

a long december is so great. put that on a few mix cds always right behind gone til november. the ultimate sad sap 1-2 punch

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Sunday, 12 August 2018 06:23 (five years ago) link

I nearly voted for "miller's angels," love the way that song drifts

princess of hell (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 August 2018 08:21 (five years ago) link

that song has a few distinct parts, love the whole of it but the second half is such a great mope fest

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Monday, 13 August 2018 17:14 (five years ago) link

my sister had this album. it was the law in 1996 that you had to order it from columbia house.

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 August 2018 02:19 (five years ago) link

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Wednesday, 29 August 2018 04:48 (five years ago) link

Not what I voted for but that sounds like my kind of karaoke

Slight wish that I’d voted for “children in bloom” because that chorus/guitar-line is great

lol

fuck i should've voted for "monkey" or literally any other song

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 August 2018 00:10 (five years ago) link

always thought of walkaways as a closing to goodnight elisabeth

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Thursday, 30 August 2018 00:17 (five years ago) link

I wish there were better lyrics for 'Have You Seen Me Lately', it feels like a great track that Duritz didn't know what to do with.

campreverb, Thursday, 30 August 2018 00:29 (five years ago) link

aw i love the second verse of that song

Damn the drums sound great on this.

Would've voted for "A Long December" at the time of the poll, but today definitely going with "Children In Bloom".

I would have voted for "Angels of the Silences" (which I've always wanted to see them perform live) or "A Long December," but god damn, not a single vote for "Goodnight Elisabeth"?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 20:07 (one year ago) link

All the zero vote songs are good tbf

Spottie, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 21:58 (one year ago) link

I love this whole album. It edges out the first one for me.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 21:58 (one year ago) link

Depends on my mood I think but they’re pretty equal in quality
