The first of the third (and final) wave of the HAND releases of 1990, wiki informs me that:

The disc's twelve tracks were released, and achieved their highest chart position, in 1972 and 1973. It includes one #1 Top 40 hits and three #2 hits.

Unlike most other discs in the series, this particular volume retails, used, at $40 and upwards.

...which is still true, as used copies currently start at around $39 and new ones at $90+ on Amazon.

Not a lot of overlap with UK charts there.

("Daisy a Day" and "My Maria" are missing. Also, the only version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" I could find was the full 9 min one)

It's always amazed me how much "My Maria" already sounded like a Brooks & Dunn song that of course they had to cover it.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 17:47 (five years ago) link

A lot of dross on this one imo. Going for "Maria."

"Funny Face" on Spotify is a rerecord'''the original

This sounds like original version of “My Maria” (featuring Larry Carlton) https://open.spotify.com/track/1ISpRMqSGcX3d4L3aETPT9?si=qAuU52MQSB-bXCWrE48TPg

Suspicious Hiveminds (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 18:15 (five years ago) link

"My Maria." B.W. also recorded "Shambala," but lost the hit to Three Dog Night.

clemenza, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

(Which is probably the link before my post--oops.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

No, it wasn’t. Don’t worry. When I said “sounds like” it was a *humble* way of saying “it is.”

Suspicious Hiveminds (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

Nah, it's the correct version of "My Maria".

If I remember my liner notes right, "Shambala" was pitched to 3DN by a song plugger, who turned around after they agreed to cut the song and pitched it to Stevenson. the 3DN camp caught wind of this, rushed into the studio to record and mix the song, with acetates being helicoptered out to specific radio stations immediately afterwards.

The El Chicano song is hawt, which also reminds me that "Sauvecito" by Malo really should have been on one of these comps.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

These polls have had me doing some "where are they now" research. Stevenson died undergoing heart valve surgery in 1988 at the age of 38.

Freddy "Boom Boom" QAnon (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link

These comps are always gonna be hit and miss, but there is some truly unlistenable shit on this one. "The Playground in My Mind" and "Funny Face" are like being force-fed syrup through your nostrils.

prob my maria, but sorely tempted to pull the trigger on deodato here

I like that song but have only heard it in recent years. Don’t remember it from back then. Although I might say that for quite a few songs on these comps

Suspicious Hiveminds (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 August 2018 00:33 (five years ago) link

The album version of Also Sprach Zarathustra, nine minutes of Deodato's band jamming in C7, is kind of great in a Bitches Brew lite way. Billy Cobham and Stanley Clarke shine.

I remember Deodato, Dueling Banjos, Gilbert O'Sullivan and Albert Hammond.

"Sauvecito" by Malo really should have been on one of these comps.

It's on one of the Rhino "Soul Hits of the '70s" comps.

Makes sense. I first got it (in the 45 mix) on the What It Is! Funk box.

Can't tell if the one pup in that video was obeying the song's command or just wanted the eff outta there.

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Saturday, 11 August 2018 15:44 (five years ago) link

Gallery sneaking' up on the rails suddenly in the representation stakes in this series. Sadly, this one seems to have been their last hit, so assume this is the last time we'll see them. They almost got my vote in fact this time but Albert Hammond's moog and oh so anglophile enunciation of the lyrics just pips them.

Jeff W, Monday, 13 August 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link

Don’t think I’ve heard either the Gallery song or The Albert Hammond song here.

Before the hysteria begins: I didn't vote for it, but I don't hate "Dueling Banjos" or anything. In the context of the film, it's pretty great. As a radio hit...I can't imagine what it would be like to to hear "Dueling Banjos" over a car radio.

clemenza, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 00:03 (five years ago) link

“Dueling Banjos” is fantastic and it was my vote. Am I correct that one of the banjos isn’t even a banjo? It’s an acoustic guitar, yes?

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 01:32 (five years ago) link

thank u 5 voters, you restored my faith in ilm

also this comp is so dire i am not surprised it won

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 01:59 (five years ago) link

The voter I want to hear from is "The Morning After" vote. I figure there's got to be a great story there...a 120-year-old Titanic survivor or something.

clemenza, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 02:19 (five years ago) link

Lover of “Poseidon Adventure”? in which case, I mean, it’s not a wrong opinion
