The Goon Sax

There have been occasional posts about them, mostly in Go-Betweens threads. Louis Forster is likely a bit tired of that angle:

Sometimes people will come up and ask me about a record or certain songs or whatever, and it’s really embarrassing to me because I just don’t know them. I have to be like, ‘Sorry, I actually don’t know what you’re talking about.'

They have a stupendously wretched pun for a name, but their second album was released last week, so let's grant them a dedicated thread anyway.

I've only seen very positive reviews of the new record, but I'm undecided after just one full listen.

This is the third track they unveiled just before the album, We Can't Win.

they are nice, but they lack a certain edge that transforms bands from "good" to "great" i think

What's the pun?

goonbags are known as goon sacks in brissie

OK, a goonbag, an Australian Thing?

Zach Same (Tom D.), Saturday, 22 September 2018 09:33 (five years ago) link

The term "goon bag/sack" seems to be. I seem to recall wine-in-a-bag-within-a-cask was itself an Australian, er, innovation as well.

To me, Goon Sax are Brisbane's most interesting band since the Blank Realm/Kitchen's Floor era. They are like a new generation in BNE music. They have a really good side project too called Soot, although I'm not sure if I'm spelling that right since I have heaps of trouble finding any online links about that band.

lightonthefloor, Monday, 24 September 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

Soot appears to be the right spelling. Interesting. With Riley Jones on vocals and bass, it seems!? eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JegeFNLfD8o

Thought this thread was about Kenny G

I keep coming back to this one for the way it threatens to turn into Swell Maps or something in the second half. And...for the obscure utensils.

one year passes...

I guess it falls to me again to mention they're back! Third LP released July 9th, etc, etc. Sounding ever less rickety...

four weeks pass...

i think the new album is really good! a bit nervier than their previous releases but i think the songwriting is top notch, clever lines throughout and memorable choruses.

i wasn't sure about it at first but it's growing on me

I had never heard them at all before, but I caught "Desire" on the local indie radio station the other day and absolutely loved it. Ordered the new record.

that was a highlight, yeah. i also loved the two singles, and i'm powerless to resist the big rock moves of "the chance."

This is really good! I didn't expect it to be as absolutely charming as it is, for lack of a better word.

I had "Sleep EZ" on both year-end and decade-end lists.

Not that I'm any help--except for in the car, I barely listen music anymore--but I don't know how any moderate-sized band lasts anymore. If you took today's conditions--streaming, COVID, economy, etc.--and applied them across time, we wouldn't know who the Velvet Underground or the Clash or the Replacements or just about anybody were today.

Their Twitter feed is a little spooky. So many announced shows that won't happen. : (
