I've been enjoying turbile epic casual, stpl idle while walking around in fall weather lately

silverfish, Monday, 22 October 2018 14:30 (five years ago) link

that is a weird sentence I just wrote

silverfish, Monday, 22 October 2018 14:31 (five years ago) link

violvoi with e0 as a runner up

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 22 October 2018 14:35 (five years ago) link

violvioc is an amazing space submarine battle but i wish it hit just a little bit harder, there are a couple of *massive* depth charges but once it's reached that level i want it to just stay there instead of dropping back down. also the groove it finally settles into is sweet, wouldn't mind if it kicked in sooner. despite all this it's my pick without a second thought.

Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Monday, 22 October 2018 14:42 (five years ago) link

might be better on ILM?!

toby, Monday, 22 October 2018 14:57 (five years ago) link

(ah I see you already spotted that, sorry)

toby, Monday, 22 October 2018 14:57 (five years ago) link

this is the one I bought on vinyl. Agree with BradNelson - violvoic followed by e0

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Monday, 22 October 2018 14:58 (five years ago) link

gonna come down to violvoic vs e0 for me (with honorable mentions to dummy casual pt 2, xflood, 9chr0, and gonk tuf hi). Need to re-listen to make the call.

fwiw 2 has the honor of featuring the least essential track in the whole box set imo (peal MA)

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 22 October 2018 16:06 (five years ago) link

typo in the poll choices, should be 'donk tuf hi'

one thing that my dog really loves is when i airdrum/fingertap along to autechre on her snout, forehead, paws, and back. she seriously can't get enough of it.

unfortunately my only decent pair of headphones broke a few weeks ago, so i've just been listening tot his with iphone earbuds :(

Karl Malone, Monday, 22 October 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

misscanned fingertap as fap

elyc9 7hres like elyc6 0nset on elseq always reminds me of this darwin quote:

It is interesting to contemplate a tangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent upon each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us.

though bonkers as it is, the one here doesn't grow and develop half as much as the one on elseq.

six of eight (midst) sounds like a struggle to become something great - not that they tried and failed to make a great track, the struggle is the point.

dummy casual pt 2 is like a forced march on a cocktail of cocaine and ecstacy. (on acid!)

think this might overall be a better collection than nts 1 for me, since i often skip t1a1 and bbqbbq; peal MA may be inessential but it slips by harmlessly enough.

Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Monday, 22 October 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

dummy casual pt2 for the sheer wtf - probably the most out-there track of the sessions

now listening to the seismic vibrating-rulers-on-a-table-edge section of violvoic and wishing I had voted for this

god these records are so so so good

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Tuesday, 23 October 2018 04:31 (five years ago) link

peal MA is awesome, kinda confused about the consensus opinion that it's inessential. it's more than a necessary breather, it's another extreme explored. I think it's one of the most interesting tracks in the whole sessions.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 22:19 (five years ago) link

I like it. makes me think of a slinky that's been stretched out and someone keeps flicking it to send a pulse down the coil

as much as i love violvoic i'm voting for gonk tuf hi. idk what to say about it, it's just insane and i love it.

macropuente (map), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 04:15 (five years ago) link

the first half of this is bonkers

now listening to the seismic vibrating-rulers-on-a-table-edge section of violvoic and wishing I had voted for this

i wish this section could go indefinitely, it's so good

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 24 October 2018 04:33 (five years ago) link

i enjoyed the broadcasts quite a bit. since getting the CD box i've been slow to explore the material, but 9 chr0 is a sure favorite - the sheer decrepitude of it. i picture an old jalopy, a mangled printer, Chappie, or Number 5 - twisted and fucked up beyond recognition (almost), but still functioning on some level. maybe its Chappie's car radio (theme music), just after wresting a wrecked auto from a junkyard compactor, as he drives off. It does move the air in satisfying ways, perpetually grinding, folding in on itself.. small fluctuations in signal strength/density and other nuances give it a sort of ever-shifting, slippery animation. definitely a 'choice' Ae track :)

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 05:00 (five years ago) link

my top 3 from this are six of eight, violvoic (violent voice?) and e0.

violvoic won

octobeard, Wednesday, 24 October 2018 05:43 (five years ago) link

I was gonna say 9 chr0 is an example of Ae music which could not be made by anyone else, but then I realised the whole 8 hour shebang is so completely them that music like this would literally not exist if they didn't make it. Not many artists can claim that.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 05:58 (five years ago) link

Hm, I might walk that back a bit, I could imagine Aphex, Tim Hecker and even some metal bands making music that feels like some of the tracks here. But the majority of recent Ae music could not come from anyone else.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 07:25 (five years ago) link

violvoic contains the most astonishing moment on the whole set so far if I listen on headphones - i.e. when those snarling 'ruler' noises seem to go full binaural 3d about two thirds in

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 08:18 (five years ago) link

you all are making me wish I'd voted violvoic. In the end I flipped a coin and it came up e0

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 24 October 2018 10:30 (five years ago) link

(violent voice?)

As MatthewK pointed out on another thread, it's a 'voice' from Confield's uviol.

Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 10:42 (five years ago) link

uviol is one of the only tracks on Confield I can say I truly enjoy so maybe that's why I like it

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 11:05 (five years ago) link

wow they are kind of similar aren't they? same rhythm, although violvoic is a lot more violent

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 11:17 (five years ago) link

it's like the peaceful satellite cruising harmlessly through space in uviol got armed to the teeth and angry.

Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 11:19 (five years ago) link

I read violvoic as "violin voice" (possibly "viola voice"), knowing that a lot of Ae titles are just shorthand between Rob and Sean so that they know how to refer to and id specific tracks

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 24 October 2018 11:21 (five years ago) link

The last two minutes of violvoic is probably my favorite part of all the NTS Sessions

silverfish, Wednesday, 24 October 2018 19:10 (five years ago) link

alright, violvoic is massive

I love the idea that there is a massive parameter space out there, like a quarry, from which their algorithms pull slabs of sound for the guys to cut up and sequence.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 25 October 2018 01:22 (five years ago) link

I was listening to NTS 2 last night while cooking and violvoic was playing and my 5 year old daughter didn't want to come into the kitchen because the music was "too scary"

silverfish, Thursday, 25 October 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link

my 21 year old sister in law said the same thing when i was playing elseq! that was a rare occasion, i almost never play recent ae if anyone's in the house.

makes me think of a slinky that's been stretched out and someone keeps flicking it to send a pulse down the coil

i like this image. re: peal MA, these tracks can't really be compared as standalone "pieces" ... it's more that it sustains the breathing room / 'down time' vibe that characterises (most of) the second half of the set. e0 is sort of one-dimensional and repetitive, despite having nice qualities. the latter "tracks" serve the whole well. as for 9 chr0, i don't think Tim Hecker or Aphex approach the type of thorough (thoroughly fucked) plasticity, or malleability in their tracks/sounds), like Autechre has shown. i don't know, maybe Hecker could hack together a processed collage of sounds, but i don't think he could touch the process Ae have honed over the last few years.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Thursday, 1 November 2018 05:14 (five years ago) link

9 chr0 really came alive for me tonight, it’s like really playful and kind of sexy delayed gratification teased out for 15 minutes

Over a blues progression

macropuente (map), Thursday, 1 November 2018 07:24 (five years ago) link

I ended up voting for violvoic for many of the reasons already stated in this thread, but my second choice would be turbile epic casual, stpl idle, which hasn't really been discussed much. As far as ambient-ish autechre goes, it's one of the better ones they've made. Reminds me a bit of oversteps era autechre (an underrated era), especially Yuop, though in this case a bit lighter and given a lot more space (Yuop pushes you down a bit, turbile lets you float up and away).

silverfish, Thursday, 1 November 2018 20:16 (five years ago) link

not sure which track it is, but it's one of the more ambient tracks on here that sounds like one of those old toy laughing bags you used to get, but like millions and millions of them... a big bag full of little laughing bags floating like space debris

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Thursday, 1 November 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 2 November 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link

Less spread than with nts 1, though for me this one is more consistent.

Yuop is great, it builds more than turbile - though that's has a little more variety than it seems on first listen, if you skip through you can hear the main background timbre changing quite radically.

WHAT

macropuente (map), Friday, 16 November 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

i know what i'm doing every night for the entire winter

macropuente (map), Friday, 16 November 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

so, in my completely amateur opinion, guessing, totally speculating, based upon listening to 5 of them in full and then scanning across random ones from across all 444 of the videos:

these sound like really slowed down, time-stretched samples. if you time-stretch pretty much anything to a ridiculous degree (like making a half second clip into a 40 second clip), they almost always come out sounding something like this. so if i had to guess, they set up a patch to automatically timestretch samples and then convert them to visual data, then dumped 444 of their audio samples into it and uploaded the results. i've been fucking around with max/msp quite a bit over the last few months, and it's certainly capable of outputting visuals like the ones seen on these videos.

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 November 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link

i'm gonna grab the audio from a couple of these videos and see if they make any sense when time-stretched back to a 1 or 2 second clip.

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 November 2018 19:32 (five years ago) link

i'm gonna do the session 3 poll stand by

macropuente (map), Friday, 16 November 2018 19:34 (five years ago) link

poll widget can't handle 444 items so I guess it's going to have to be a ballot poll

101 is my favorite so far

So elseq was 5 hrs, nts is 8hrs and now this at 13hrs. Next thing they release will be 21 hours long.

earlier this week shared production files of their own making for various pieces of widely used musical technology from the companies Elektron, Nord, and Akai (see: factmag.com)

going back to NTS because... well my theory is that I'm always around one or two Ae albums behind the latest releases and I want to see if it's clicked any more.

I have to admit, a lot of NTS is impenetrable to me - claustrophobic and arduous for the most part - but violvoic is FANTASTIC
