One band has a canonical rock debut, another has... what? more sales probably, what else?

i feel safe saying Comedown Machine is better than the entire Kings of Leon discography

I like the sound of both bands. I only really like 'last nite' by the Strokes. I think I like at least 4 or 5 songs by the Kings.

another joke poll

niels, Sunday, 28 October 2018 12:03 (five years ago) link

not really. kings have been called "the southern strokes" for 15+ years. another joke poll would have been another green world versus secret life of plants or 'dread zeppelin' vs. 'greta van fleet'

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 28 October 2018 13:34 (five years ago) link

fair enough

strokes will walk this as they should though, since KoL are insufferable

KOL youtube videos, it turns out, are splendid repositories for the opinions of dullards

these people need to get on the rockism thread and tell us how it really is

budo jeru, Sunday, 28 October 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link

Both terrible bands.

"Four Kicks" is a really good song and I remember really liking the video

flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 04:39 (five years ago) link

2005, the last year as far as I know that MTV2 played videos regularly.

I've said this before, but The Strokes were one of the most weirdly influential bands of the early 2000s. I have no idea why so many bands (some of which ended up being much better than The Strokes) wanted to be like them, but they sure had quite an impact. Their music is mostly terrible, but I'd still pick them over Kings of Leon just because they had that effect.

nothing the strokes did was nearly as awful as "sex on fire"

niels, Monday, 29 October 2018 11:12 (five years ago) link

the strokes have a kinda odd position in culture where they're a little overrated in the 00s rock canon but also never quite achieved the level of mainstream success they probably deserved, and contrary to the narrative that they fell off somewhere around 2006, their last album was pretty great

ufo, Monday, 29 October 2018 11:18 (five years ago) link

This is a strange comparison because even though these groups are ostensibly contemporaries, they feel like they exist in different parts of the 00s. No one knew who Kings of Leon were when everyone was crazy about the Strokes, and no one cared about the Strokes anymore when Kings of Leon suddenly became massive. Like I, don't know what it was like in the US, but there was a weird year or so there where Kings of Leon were like The Most Popular Modern Rock Band In Australia. The singles from Only By The Night were inescapable in 2009. That shit went 9 times platinum here.

Is This It is such a reliable listen for me. I'm amazed at how much I still love it every time I hear it and I find almost nothing cringeworthy about it, which is way more than I can say for most rock records that I loved from the 00s.

I've heard KoL called the "Southern Strokes" but I think the only song of theirs I've heard is "Use Somebody" which just sounded like Daughtry or something with slightly less annoying vocals.
