Katie Dey - Flood Network

This has slowly turned into one of my favourite records of the decade, it just emotionally wrecks me every time. I've seen the tag "bedroom-pop" thrown at it a few times, which I guess makes sense since it has the same kind of introverted intimacy, but it's so much more ambitious and otherworldly than that. Something like "It's Simpler to Make Home on the Ground" sounds like it could come off Another Green World, for instance

i completely adore this album, fantastic songs and soundscapes

voting fear o the light which is the noisy heart of the album

ufo, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 06:38 (five years ago) link

absolutely one of the best albums this decade

ufo, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 06:41 (five years ago) link

This is to celebrate the release of her new collaboration album with Girls Rituals later today, yes? It's the album 2018 has been building to

Anyway this is an amazing record. Voting (f8)

imago, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 07:21 (five years ago) link

I’ve been meaning to make this poll for awhile now so I didn’t really have that collaborative album in mind, but I’m very much looking forward to hearing it!

Fear O’ the Light is definitely the standout, but yeah (F8) is an amazing interlude track that deserves some votes

josh az (2011nostalgia), Wednesday, 7 November 2018 17:23 (five years ago) link

it feels less like an interlude than the climax of the album! the actual closing track only begins after a short silence and is much more minimal & concise (while still an excellent ending)

the collaboration album is out in like 3 hours :)

imago, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 17:30 (five years ago) link

I love this album so so much

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I take back what I said earlier about (F8), it is indeed the jaw-dropping climax this album deserves. Voted Fear O’ the Light though, it’s just such a perfect three minutes

I was disappointed by the dizzy collab album, but I have a good feeling about this one

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 31 May 2019 05:48 (four years ago) link

"dissolving" makes me want her to go full-on breakbeats sometime? and also to cover something from vespertine

why hasn't imago showed up to celebrate the album's release yet

ufo, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link

I like it! Sorry, should have reported in. It gets better with repeat listens too.

imago, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 14:29 (four years ago) link

It doesn't quite have the otherworldly magic of Flood Network but it is a detailed, lovely thing

imago, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link

agreed that it's a grower, it isn't perfect like flood network ("reflection"/"escaping" feel a little slight & halt the flow) but the added expansiveness otherwise fits perfectly, it's great that she's moved in this direction

prob my favorite artist of the second half of the decade

lowercase (eric), Thursday, 6 June 2019 14:05 (four years ago) link

sent the album i've been working on to my label 3 weeks ago and haven't heard from them since i think that means they love it

This is her best imo. Painfully beautiful songwriting start to finish.

tangenttangent, Friday, 24 July 2020 09:07 (three years ago) link

'happiness' is a clear SOTY contender, it is up there with 'debt -> (f8)', which if you know me is a pretty big up

imago, Friday, 24 July 2020 09:22 (three years ago) link

well this is delightful!

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 24 July 2020 15:34 (three years ago) link

I sometimes find stuff in this "scene" tends to coast on cool sonics, which this has plenty of, but the songs are really striking as well, and they leverage each other beautifully

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 24 July 2020 15:56 (three years ago) link

gonna just post it here as well

i mean how good

imago, Friday, 24 July 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

So uh, she deleted the tweets about it but Katie’s been getting bombarded by Taylor Swift stans all day

im katie ...

— katie dey (@katie_dey) July 24, 2020

(Check the replies)

Anyways the new album’s really good! The back half is especially strong — and the new version of data is stunning

josh az (2011nostalgia), Saturday, 25 July 2020 01:01 (three years ago) link

why did she get bombarded? for...releasing an album on the same day?

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Saturday, 25 July 2020 01:05 (three years ago) link

she made a joke saying her "ass was fatter than taylor's" and swift stans are mad at her for "body shaming"

ufo, Saturday, 25 July 2020 01:13 (three years ago) link

can we uncancel the r-word pls

imago, Saturday, 25 July 2020 01:19 (three years ago) link

This album blows taytay's latest effort out of the water. It's a sublime and truthful and daring vision laid down from beginning to end in such a gorgeous way. Dancing-Happiness-LeavIng is a hattrick.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 25 July 2020 14:04 (three years ago) link

yeah those 3 songs in a row

I have not listened to Katie Dey very much, but I kind of stumbled on the new remix/covers album (urdata) and I like it a lot — more than mydata, I think, although I only went to that after hearing urdata first.
