I know it’s mainstream country which isn’t exactly ilx’s bag but this album just went number one and he won some big awards

The back half of this is really good. Homesick through My Where I Come From, specifically. LIve Forever is a beautiful ballad. Just really sweet stuff.

yeah thats my fav stretch too.

haven't heard the whole album but i like "homesick" and "baby come back to me". "short skirt weather" could have been good but the lyrics are a little cringey
found most of his singles prior to this album to be thoroughly mediocre but admittedly "heaven" won me over

Saw him present an award at the CMAs the other night. Don’t think he performed. I feel like there’s a small bit of r’n’b in his singing style.

idek what ppl are referring to when they say they detect some r&b influence in the music of kane brown, thomas rhett etc. but apparently others do b/c they've been saying it for the past few years. most men in mainstream country sing in a very straightforward manner lately imo *shrug*
― dyl, Saturday, 17 November 2018 02:30 (five years ago) link
there is no way its not like whatever the racism version of the placebo effect is right?? he just sounds like a (very good) mainstream country singer -- that said i do think it's interesting how he addresses politics & indentity esp in songs like (the excellent) my where i come from
― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 17 November 2018 03:13 (five years ago) link
i mean someone can correct me if there's a specific R&B element they're talking about but
― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 17 November 2018 03:14 (five years ago) link
The cover maybe but that’s about it

I was jogging to this album about 6 months ago. It rules.

it just came out! you mean teh first one?
― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 17 November 2018 03:48 (five years ago) link
Ha yeah I guess

"weekend" is seriously amazing. it feels like the song timberlake pharrell and timbaland were trying to make except they're all washed and pretty much out of ideas. this album is a little more hard rock than i'd personally prefer, but he's a very good songwriter and compelling personality. the softer moments are really nice tho... "work" is my other fav it reminds me of like tony rich project "nobody knows"

i wasn't going to listen to it but i like "nobody knows" enough to give it a try now
― dyl, Monday, 26 November 2018 00:58 (five years ago) link
hmm not understanding the comparison but it is a nice song

He was the (non-marching band/balloon/Rockette) stand-out of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! Immediately got the country-soul feel, which is something that can happen without any overselling when the suits etc. allow---will def check his album.

idek what ppl are referring to when they say they detect some r&b influence in the music of kane brownI don't know how to not hear r&b in this, also don't see what's wrong with contemporary country being influenced by edm/r&b/rap
his vocal moaning style, the production, songwriting
anyway this is v enjoyable thx for recommending
― niels, Monday, 26 November 2018 15:23 (five years ago) link
listening to the first song on the album it's obv a different beast to those vids posted
anyway, brown himself acknowledges the r&b inspiration (and then again really why wouldn't he)
But he’s convinced his music will ultimately bring folks together. While his early songs had a bro-country feel ("I don’t play them anymore because they’re that bad"), his latest demos, like "Heaven," add a soulful flair. It’s a formula he believes will take him to the next level: "You put my voice on R&B melodies, on top of a real country band, and the sky’s the limit."

my mom completely flipped for the big hit single duet whose name I can't remember and asked for his first album on CD last Christmas.
― alpine static, Monday, 26 November 2018 17:11 (five years ago) link
weekend's a pretty good song but for anyone who has ever lived in a popular vacation/resort town the first 50 seconds of the video will trigger some PTSD
― alpine static, Monday, 26 November 2018 17:17 (five years ago) link
the repeating lyric gimmick in the chorus of "weekend" isn't my favorite, but i fuckin love the organ and guitar tones
― twin sinema (voodoo chili), Monday, 26 November 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link
Live Forever is such a perfectly constructed pop ballad.
― Celtoes Adidas (Spottie), Monday, 10 December 2018 21:52 (five years ago) link
i'll be shocked if "My Where I Come From" is not a *huge* hit on country radio
― alpine static, Friday, 14 December 2018 23:46 (five years ago) link
Very pleased about this threadThe other artists ilm is checking for this year are beyond boring
― We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Saturday, 15 December 2018 02:42 (five years ago) link
Wouldn't mind hearing any track on the radio, but having them altogether on one album gets kinda sleepy---approach is okay, but needs to take a little leap of intensity, performance and material-wise.
