best band you can wear

this would be a pretty cool music festival line-up imo.

i probably missed some major groups, whoops. please note that in order to qualify, the band must be at least kind of good (no plain white t's) and somewhat known (not a local band called turtleneck) also, names like velvet underground and tuxedomoon don't qualify because you can't wear a velvet underground or a tuxedomoon. morning jacket would qualify, but my morning jacket does not. good luck

i would be tempted to pick Felt, but Lawrence used the exact same vocal melody on about a dozen different songs on some of their best albums. i feel like i should punish Lawrence for this by not voting for them

Toss up between Helmet and The Cardigans, but I'll happily write in Hat

i hate to do this, but i'm afraid the rule of law disqualifies Hat

my trusted internet resources tell me that 'hat' is norwegian for 'hate'. and hate is a much better name for a black metal band, so i'm assuming that's what they were going for.

brave belt is very debatable. i think adjectives are ok, but only if they would be universally recognized (eg, everyone would agree that a certain pair of jeans are "pissed". but not everyone would agree that a certain belt is "brave"). i don't know why this matters to me, but it does.

I want to say Les Sans Culottes, but I suppose by definition that's not wearable.

What does this actually mean in French? It looks like it would mean The Without Pants, which I like in its awkward ungrammaticality, but maybe it just means The Pantsless.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 02:50 (five years ago) link

it means they didn’t wear culottes (long pants), it’s a term from the revolution, denotes a kind of working class status, anti-aristocracy etc.

budo jeru, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 02:53 (five years ago) link

sorry it’s actually the opposite: sans culottes didn’t wear knee breeches, they just wore regular long trousers

the thermals is a good one but is that a thing that people say? i say "thermal underwear" or "thermal shirt" or "thermal pants". i never say "my thermals". but i only wear the stuff like 5-6 days a year so i am not an expert.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 05:33 (five years ago) link

same. but i can't find another usage for the word so it must be underwear!

Saddo Wannabe (rip van wanko), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 05:37 (five years ago) link

Thermals are created by the uneven heating of Earth's surface from solar radiation, and are an example of convection, specifically atmospheric convection.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 05:39 (five years ago) link

if you ask me out on the street what a thermal is, i'd probably respond just like that, verbatim

do plaid have any defenders here? i thought maybe they would, as the poll's only electronic music representative. but tbh, even back in the late 90s when i was listening to them a lot more, they always struck me as one of those groups that is no one's very favorite.

Karl Malone, Friday, 23 November 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

listening to plaid often prompts the thought "oh, you know what i should listen to..."

Needs Acid Jazz band Corduroy, not that anyone should vote for them.

Quck discogs search shows no Lycra, but there is a Spandex.

Dissapointingly no band named the Alice Band.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 23 November 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link

Just discovered Corduroy made a comeback this year, which has quite a witty title.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 23 November 2018 21:33 (five years ago) link

Headband were a progressive, blues rock band formed in Adelaide in February 1971 by bass guitarist Chris Bailey; drummer Joff Bateman; singer-songwriter and keyboardist Peter Beagley; and singer-songwriter and guitarist Mauri Berg. The group supported Elton John, The Rolling Stones at their Sydney performances.
