Stooges

Mark G, Friday, 25 January 2019 07:24 (five years ago) link

I guess I need to listen to that John Cale album

Oor Neechy, Friday, 25 January 2019 10:55 (five years ago) link

John Martyn juuuuust barely edges it past Can and Todd Rundgren for me

tough one

I love how I have a list of nearly 50 albums yet others post ones I forgot about or haven't heard yet but might love. What a great year.
Still, even with all these old classic years I still usually find 50 albums a year I love up to 2018. Hope that continues.

Oor Neechy, Friday, 25 January 2019 13:39 (five years ago) link

Solid Air for me. Running Marley, Sabbath and Herbie (Sextant) pretty close. Would have considered Paris 1919 if it was there.

Others (Christ, what a year):

Larry Young - Lawrence of Newark
Rahsaan - Prepare Thyself to Deal With a Miracle
Weather Report - Sweetnighter
Eddie Henderson - Realization
Michael White - The Land of Spirit and Light

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Friday, 25 January 2019 16:33 (five years ago) link

Weather Report - Sweetnighter
Eddie Henderson - Realization

oh yeah, they should be in there too.

Oor Neechy, Friday, 25 January 2019 17:28 (five years ago) link

the larry young is in the list btw

Oor Neechy, Friday, 25 January 2019 17:28 (five years ago) link

Oh, so it is! So many amazing records, I must be have looked straight through it.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:43 (five years ago) link

That reminds me, Larry Young plays on Carlos Santana & John McLaughlin - Love Peace Surrender, also 1973.

*there's (Noel Emits), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:45 (five years ago) link

I don't know that one

Oor Neechy, Friday, 25 January 2019 18:22 (five years ago) link

Voted Noah Howard, but not sure it's '73.
Maybe should have voted Stevie Wonder.

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 25 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

For my year: Don't Break the Oath, Purple Rain, Climate of Hunter, Treasure... I feel like there are hundreds of interesting albums from that year that I haven't explored yet.

― jmm

i can't vote on '73 - these trails, "lark" by linda lewis, itsuroh shimoda's "love songs & lamentations"... no, early '70s and late '70s are prime time for me.

i have an easier time of it since '76 wasn't really an album year. there are some weird cult records i love, but for top record? nah nothing comes close to van der graaf generator's "still life"

The Elvis of Nationalism and Amoral Patriotism (rushomancy), Saturday, 26 January 2019 00:58 (five years ago) link

Solid Air.

Lee626, Saturday, 26 January 2019 01:58 (five years ago) link

For my year, Chuck Berry Is On Top.
From this list, For Your Pleasure.
ILX moan: Screaming Target(Big Youth), Coast to Coast Fever (David Wiffen), Honky Tonk Heroes (Waylon Jennings).

i went for the roxy album. but my fave albums of 1973 are missing here. first and foremost "dark side of the moon", the one pink floyd album i would keep. the "selling england by the pound" which was my fave genesis album in my teenage years. brian eno's "here come the warm jets", an amazing stroke of genius, never has pop music been so exciting. litle feat's "dixie chicken", i have always loved their hot mix of rock, blues & folk. then their was john cale's impressionist master piece "paris 1919". not to forget neil young's live "time fades away", my favourite concert album by good old neil, it seriously kicks ass.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Saturday, 26 January 2019 18:50 (five years ago) link

apparently the eno was in my 74 albums list. Oh well.

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 26 January 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link

Well, it did come out in 1974, as far as I can tell.

pomenitul, Saturday, 26 January 2019 19:08 (five years ago) link

January 1974 according to Wiki but the label says 1973.

Wee boats wobble but they don't fall down (Tom D.), Saturday, 26 January 2019 19:14 (five years ago) link

Must admit I always thought it was from 1973.

well if i do the whole decade it will be in the 74 poll you just need to wait a month to vote for it

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 26 January 2019 19:17 (five years ago) link

As Bee OK said upthread, UK release was November 1973.

dorsalstop, Saturday, 26 January 2019 19:25 (five years ago) link

US release 74 then?

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 26 January 2019 19:38 (five years ago) link

same!

imago, Saturday, 26 January 2019 19:57 (five years ago) link

tough, but went with Lark's Tongues over Future Days or For Your Pleasure

sleeve, Saturday, 26 January 2019 20:41 (five years ago) link

I don't know that one

Reasonable as apparently I made it up ;-)

But devotion IS peace, as I keep telling my disciples.

My daughter was looking at year-by-year playlists and asked, "Is this really a song from the year you were born?"

And then she played Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer".

Tried to reply to this a couple of nights ago but my keyboard was acting weird.
Was The Sting that year? Cos i think that's one of the main musical themes in that isn't it?
I think we got a best of Scott Joplin record sometime around then and i think it was something that was being played around to some extent. So you'd be hearing it, which might mean even more than in his actual heyday.

Stevolende, Saturday, 26 January 2019 21:14 (five years ago) link

This one was difficult, but eventually it came down to Cosmic Slop vs Innervisions, and I went with Funkadelic.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 26 January 2019 21:16 (five years ago) link

i suspect the latter will win this poll

Oor Neechy, Sunday, 27 January 2019 00:05 (five years ago) link

heard an excellent '73 record tonight that didn't make this list, Cymande's Second Time Round:

innervisions is great, but it already won '73 best album grammy, i don't feel like it particularly needs my praise

The Elvis of Nationalism and Amoral Patriotism (rushomancy), Sunday, 27 January 2019 03:35 (five years ago) link

It must've won a fair few ilx polls over the years too

Has Golden Earring fulfilled its promise?

pomenitul, Monday, 28 January 2019 09:54 (five years ago) link

Their latest album, from 2012, is titled Tits 'n Ass, so I'm tempted to say no.

pomenitul, Monday, 28 January 2019 09:55 (five years ago) link

radar love was definitely the single of 1973. when that song came on in the disco everyone went down to the knees and whirled around with the hair. remember at the time boys & girls had long hair.

There is some nice psychedelic moments on Moontan, it's a pretty good LP.

yes fans were clearly the greta van fleet fans of their day

or possibly people voted _before_ hearing "tales from topographic oceans"

voted dolls, though mott would have given it a run for its money if it were on there. from my year of birth -- misterioso? buddy holly? little richard?

I thought about voting for the Can but decided it would get plenty of votes without me, so I voted for Funkadelic instead.
