It predates "Shaft" by about a year but Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight" opens with that same swing beat on the hi-hat albeit a tad slower.

Does Ssh/Peaceful count? And, if it does, is Tony Williams the singularity?

I'd post "It's better to have" by Don Covay, but I'm on the mobile.

Should also mention that Zeppelin would incorporate "Theme From Shaft" in Dazed & Confused medleys on their late 1971 tour, right after the song was released... Bonham was probably very familiar with the break in Otis' "Try A Little Tenderness" that the intro to "Shaft" was lifted from.

Is what you're after just a sixteenth-note feel, with accents?

How bout if is played by a tambourine, like say "Tears of a Clown"? A bunch of Motown really.

Gunther Gleiben (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 20:09 (five years ago) link

If it's full-on Theme from Shaft hi-hat you need, here ya go:

That Hated song is great but the bass is dreadful...

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 20:57 (five years ago) link

that song is full-on "theme from shaft" in many ways, not just the hi-hat lol

sun-kil moonsician (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:03 (five years ago) link

I lol'd a bit when "apparently really good drummers play this pattern" was followed closely by "Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls."

Not all have the same pulse of accents. The variation in open vs closed hats of the Shaft theme is unique and unrepeated.

I don't think Regatta de Blanc belongs because it actually starts with an 8th feel on the hat, as opposed 16ths, and the faster bits later are cross-sticking, not hi-hat.

I still think this is a fine example
