I heard there's some sort of tribute gig planned for Yokota in London sometime soonish.

The videos embed properly for me.

I'd no idea this had been reissued. Must get it.

I have a few of his albums but not heard this one before. It's great, Yokoyama was really something else.

the sleeve for this really caught my eye, didn't know he did house music before all the "idyllictronica" stuff

Current favourite track is all of them - will vote when I can pick one out!

calumerio, Monday, 18 February 2019 22:41 (five years ago) link

i first heard this in 2011 and, at the time, found myself wanting to like it more than i did. different expectations or something. because of the reissue news, i listened again a few weekends ago while i was working on my kitchen and it was blowing my mind. really clicking for me more than back when. sublime all over. don't know how to vote yet.

andrew m., Monday, 18 February 2019 22:50 (five years ago) link

i first heard this record in 1995 at a dance vinyl place in providence r.i., downtown, i can't remember the name of the shop. the guy who ran it i remember as a kind of a proto-burning man type but incredibly knowledgable and friendly and enthusiastic as practically everyone who ran those sorts of shops was then. he gave me all kinds of recommendations. this is the same guy who sold me one of my favorite records of all time (on Sublime!) - the Thorn EP by Low Res with the track "Reflective Blackdebris". which a quick Google shows me there is now a released live version of. i just died.

this is what I'm thinking.

Dan S, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 02:55 (five years ago) link

tinny

lol u got that right

j., Wednesday, 20 February 2019 02:56 (five years ago) link

lol sorry for the derail but.. i now have listened to the live version of Low Res' "Reflective Blackdebris". and it appears that the original, one of the most special tracks of all time for me, is apparently not called that at all and i'd been reading the label wrong.

maybe not such a derail tho because people into susumu yokota would REALLY like the "look back with knife" collection of rare/unreleased Low Res stuff i think

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 12:08 (five years ago) link

was it amuck?

the late great, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:01 (five years ago) link

"speculative reminiscing"

which my googling has discovered was played out by aphex twin in a set two years ago! so it does please me that the was at least one room full of dancers who heard it at full volume in a really buzzing environment

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 20:42 (five years ago) link

Just heard this for the first time last week (thanks to this thread) and have listened four times since then. I think I'm voting "Kinoko" but wanna give it at least one more spin before I decide.

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 24 February 2019 16:46 (five years ago) link

Going with Akafuji - seems landscape-appropriate - starts cavernous and ends up monumental.

calumerio, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 21:27 (five years ago) link

I didn't expect this to be this good. A great find.

(I was just playing it and it segued into World Receiver which was just about goddamn perfect.)

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 7 March 2019 21:20 (five years ago) link

Sakura is peak Yokota for me but I find myself going back to the Water's Edge EP he did with Rothko quite a bit.
