Best Album on OUR Favourite Albums of......1994! Part II : ILM Loves Its Canon!!!

We had a good reason to leave out so many albums - we were doing 2 polls. At least some great albums haven't been completely overshadowed by the spectre of the canon. So please give that other poll thread the attention it deserves too. ps thanks for the lols yesterday LJ!
Best Album on OUR Favourite Albums of......1994!

below are albums we deemed either part of the 'Canon' or(what we perceived to be) 'ILM canon'.
If you have a fave missing in both lists we either dont know it, dont like it forgot it or it wasn't canon enough for this list.

As much as I love fushitsusha it aint canon even on ilm and it was dropped from the 1st poll to make room.

Jesus christ this is tough. Instinct tells me Aphex, or maybe Suede, but so many worthy options.

After several polls where I've never owned a single thing on them, this one is Portishead, easily.

Hootie & The Blowfish - Cracked Rear View

this is canon now?

Easily Slowdive for me from this batch. Still find "Souvlaki" a remarkable record.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 25 July 2019 16:21 (four years ago) link

voted Bee Thousand but holy shit i love a lot of that list. i've always preferred Sleeps With Angels to Ragged Glory which seems to get the critical love. that title track!

shout outs for:

Elliott Smith - roman candle
Codeine - White Birch

Nirvana Unplugged. I listened to it for the first time in a while the other night and it is still so unbelievably chilling and beautiful.

disappointed you let the haters get to you. no need for two polls imo, the other list is more interesting anyway

Tough choice between Crooked Rain, Downward Spiral, and Dummy.

Hard To Earn also deserves a mention.

Kyuss

^correct decision

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 28 July 2019 15:46 (four years ago) link

I saw Kyuss live twice in 1994 - at the Borderline and the Underworld. The Underworld gig is probably still the single best live gig I've seen. It was hot and hallucinatory and one abiding memory is Scott Reeder wandering dazed into the crowd at the end and noticing his feet were like hobbits' feet.

Souvlaki over Dummy and Nirvana Unplugged. Like these 3 better than the choices in 1994 part 1 poll.

fair enough

I would have LOVED to have seen Kyuss back in the day

brimstead, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 01:30 (four years ago) link

Voted Dog Man Star and it wasn’t a hard decision, but a lot of great contenders for #2 here.

brimstead, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 01:33 (four years ago) link

i can't really vote in this one as it's basically a list of all my children

frame casual (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 09:54 (four years ago) link

there's no wayI can choose between IllComm, SAWII, Parklife, Crooked Rain, Sky Valley and Dookie

Weird to thin the first Korn album came out at this time. To give them credit, they were far ahead of the curve.

frame casual (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 09:58 (four years ago) link

*think

Was that the first ever nu-metal album?

frame casual (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 09:58 (four years ago) link

yes, Kerrang gave them the nu metal label pretty much straight away then started trying to hype it up over the next few years until it took off

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 10:54 (four years ago) link

On new years day 1995 I would definitely have said Bee Thousand. Pavement didn't sound nearly cruddy enough anymore, so they couldn't compete. LOL. Had recently been pleasantly surprised by His N Hers too. But I'm pretty sure I voted for Hard to Earn a few days ago. If only because I heard it again quite recently and...totes dug it.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 11:19 (four years ago) link

GBV (who Kerr is more of a fan of than me) over SAW II is pretty lame tbh

The World According To.... (Michael B), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 00:15 (four years ago) link

I expected SAW II to win.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 00:23 (four years ago) link

thought about SAW II, but ended up voting for Dummy for all of the amazing memories I have that are associated with it

Dan S, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 02:23 (four years ago) link

look forward to voting for Maxinquaye or 94 Diskont or Tilt in the next poll

Dan S, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 02:30 (four years ago) link

I'm probably just grumpy and challopsy this morning but I'm going to bring the full wrath of my critical acumen to bear and say that the Pavement consensus on here is boring and conservative. They're boring and conservative.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 09:45 (four years ago) link

I love Pavement but I prefer the albums either side to this album

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 10:07 (four years ago) link

I guess it makes sense that it's mostly rock fans who are voting in these polls.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 10:35 (four years ago) link

I love Pavement and could probably honestly say that album ~changed my life~ or something equally hokey, but given the results feel justified in voting for the Magnetic Fields instead, even though some of the songs I thought were on Holiday were actually on one of the previous albums, ahem.

A lot of the tracks on SAWII are great but I've never quite enjoyed it as a whole and would rather sit down and listen to pretty much any other Aphex album, including SAWI. I did expect it to do better, though, as mine seems to be a pretty unusual opinion.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 10:48 (four years ago) link

I think everyone just assumed it would win so voted something else
