are junior boys legends only on ilm?

last exit is probably my favorite album of that decade and their body of work in general is stellar. but outside of the 20 threads on ilm I never see them mentioned or discussed anywhere.

i've recently had people that i would have thought knew about this band ask "what is this" when I played Last Exit at a small gathering

I wonder if they suffered any from their name being just one word away from a much more influential and popular record label. Last Exit is a great album. I still listen to it a few times a year. The rest of the albums have great moments too, but I got bored toward the end.

they were crap and only liked on ilm

They were only liked by one or two ILXors at that.

also they were made up plus the ppl who said they liked them were lying and they didn't exist either

someone on twitter was talking abt them only a few days ago -- in a kind of "that was when the blogworld was discussing junior boys because there didn't seem to be anyone else" way

i thought it was owen hatherley -- who technically is an ex-ilxor -- but twittersearch says it wasn't, so i guess they *are* legends beyond ilx (in a very attenuated kind of way)

it was a BNM selection when it came out

I remember Last Exit got 9/10 in the NME and that particular writer called it the album of the year. Sadly they must have been on their own as it didn't pop up on their end of year list (gotta make room for The Ordinary Boys, The Zutons and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb!). Uncut were behind them putting them in their top 20 that year. I don't really recall seeing the band get much exposure elsewhere. I'd put them in the same bracket as Cut Copy and The Juan Maclean who weirdly didn't connect with music critics, especially in British magazines.

Personally, I think Junior Boys are awesome. The first two albums are just about perfect (I'm actually listening to So This Goodbye now and it's still so gorgeous). The other three aren't quite as special, but are still solid with some of their best moments (Banana Ripple, EP, Hazel, Bits & Pieces, Itchy Fingers, Big Black Coat, Sneak a Picture etc). Always thought it was odd that people thought Begone Dull Care was so disappointing.

First is my fave but love the first three, including Begone.

I blame the shit live sound issues of the early pitchfork music festival

Junior Boys have always been the shit, and they’ve never made a bad album

They toured regularly in Austin TX their first handful of albums (and probably beyond that too). Caught them on their first three or so trips through and they were selling out decent-sized clubs of 400 to 500 people. I remember a tour with Caribou and a headlining show for their second album being particularly great.

Stylus and pitchfork were crazy about them for a while. Personally speaking I like em but I don’t love em. They don’t have a 5 star song in them.

I totally saw the JB/Caribou tour, can confirm it was great.

A couple of my coworkers were really into that Jessy Lanza debut album when it came out and had never heard of the Junior Boys.
