Cowboy drag? Moody 80s roots-rock/country as gay theater? I'm not sure if I love it but this song is pretty great:

I saw him play a couple of months ago and while I understand his appeal, his stuff just makes me want to listen to Roy Orbison or whatever

I can't quite put my finger on what exact 80s roots rock vocalist he reminds me of (altho yeah Orbison is def in there and is at the core of his best songs imo)

a bit of Chris Isaak for sure

Radio K in Mpls was constantly playing his The The-core song a few months ago, it was like he had bought the station or something. I kinda like it.

Great voice and I really like some of his songs ("Dead of the Night" is my favourite I guess) but after listening to the whole album I was slightly underwhelmed by the arrangements and the production -- I just wish he'd go a bit more raw, a bit more unhinged, because the whole thing started to sound a tad samey to me after a while. But maybe that's what the second album will be for. I also love his fully-formed OTT campy aesthetic and the fact that there seems to be a hot guy underneath, so I haven't lost interest yet, what can I say.

there's a bunch of places on this album where the schtick gets in the way and just becomes silly imo - a little too much vibrato, or the whipcracks and gunshot sound effects, for ex.

funny seeing a dude who was a drummer in a vancouver punk band blow up as an international star, which it seems he is doing now!

i think he's very good. a bit of a lloyd cole vibe on a few tracks, which is up my street

Ha, I knew that would be the reason for the bump. I first heard him a few months ago, on vinyl in a vintage furniture shop, OF COURSE.

he did a nice and quite charming "what's in my bag?" recently. that amoeba records vid series.

Yep, caught all of those vids. He really comes across as down to earth and charming, and I really dig the fringed mask thing! Kiss were really onto something back in the day, an aura of mystery is fun.

People comparisons are spot on, though don't miss the Elvis undertones, too. I find the album loses steam in the second half but the high points are really great. Looking forward to seeing what direction he goes in next!

eight months pass...

the duet with Shania feels like a missed opportunity, much like most of his other music
