It's boring, there's nothing to discuss.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 September 2019 13:43 (four years ago) link

Also, no one told them we're barely a fifth of the way through.

The equivalent film list is slightly better.

It's the Guardian, there's nothing to discuss.

The Inner Mounting Phlegm (Tom D.), Friday, 13 September 2019 13:47 (four years ago) link

lol I just wanted to make fun of it

brigadier pudding (DJP), Friday, 13 September 2019 13:48 (four years ago) link

also wanted to make a classic ILX "discus" callback

brigadier pudding (DJP), Friday, 13 September 2019 13:48 (four years ago) link

Compact discus.

I think I guffawed when I saw Yeezus pop up

brigadier pudding (DJP), Friday, 13 September 2019 13:50 (four years ago) link

You’re gonna laugh a lot at best of decade lists

Mommy...can I go out and VAPE tonight? (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 September 2019 13:54 (four years ago) link

Tbf I like almost half of these albums, so I guess it could be worse.

pomenitul, Friday, 13 September 2019 14:18 (four years ago) link

It really is the blandest list ever

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 13 September 2019 14:18 (four years ago) link

The Strokes in second place, holy fuck

Duke, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:02 (four years ago) link

Havent heard most of it, some very overrated stuff on there but Arctic Monkies is a total joke

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:08 (four years ago) link

God, the apathy of these blurbs.

After Britpop devolved into bedwetter indie and the US was churning out goofy pop-punk, the debut album by the New York quintet showed rock how to be cool again: all droll, drawling observations and guitar lines that steamed into a dive bar to show up the clientele. Oh, and your boss trying to be trendy by wearing a T-shirt under his blazer at the office on Fridays? Blame these guys.

#2 album of the decade!!

jmm, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:15 (four years ago) link

Jaysus fucking wept. The shame of that paragraph will follow that journo to the grave.

calzino, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:18 (four years ago) link

Way too Pitchfork-y. WTF at Vampire Weekend being better than every/any British rock album this past 20 years except some ancient albums by Radiohead, PJ Harvey and Arctic Monkeys?! Jesus Christ keep up slugabeds.

It's basically their own 2010 list with sprinkles of the Top 5s of the last decade's pitchfork's lists shaken in for good measure.

piscesx, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:34 (four years ago) link

I am cracking up at how high Yeezus is on the list. Also why are people still repping The Streets?

brigadier pudding (DJP), Friday, 13 September 2019 17:41 (four years ago) link

Yeezus is gonna be very high on a lot of lisfz

a lot of these wannabe taste-maker fules need to be big enough to admit they spent almost decades writing embarrassing hyperbole for quite a lot of fluff and guff, to quote Artie: if they start picking at that thread their whole world might start unravelling.

James Murphy’s group were the smart, snippy toast of Brooklyn after the hyper-literate breakthrough tracks Losing My Edge and Yeah.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah... yeah, hey, hey, hey, hey
Everybody keeps on talking about it... nobody's getting it done
I'm tired, tired, tired now of listening, listening... knowing that the ship's gotta run
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah... yeah, hey, hey, hey, hey
You owe me ti-ti-time, now they're writing me in... I'm gonna act like I should
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah... yeah, hey, hey, hey, hey
We've been try-try-trying now to let you in... And, you just got let in by their luck (?)
Everybody keeps on talking about it... nobody's getting it done
Everybody keeps on talking about it... nobody's getting it done
I'm tired, tired, tired now of listening, listening... knowing that the ship's gotta run, just gotta run

“Yes these records you bought over the past twenty years really are the best ones, you got them all no need to look any further”

Siegbran, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:56 (four years ago) link

idk this list is at least vaguely interesting to me in how it has a very defined vibe of the usual suspects of critically loved indie/r&b/rap for a while and then there's just White Pony at 29

ufo, Friday, 13 September 2019 22:57 (four years ago) link

The classical list was good

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Friday, 13 September 2019 23:48 (four years ago) link

It's striking how many of these I picked up for a few cents as ex-loan copies from the municipal library. My library is way hip, apparently.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 14 September 2019 04:56 (four years ago) link

Why even have a fucking best of 21st century list instead of a best albums from 2010-2019 one? It’s way too early for any century list, noone will think you’re hip by placing amy winehouse and the strokes as your two best albums of the past 20 years. Maybe in like 2060 it’s a vintage, bold choice. At this point in time I’m thinking “really!? These fucking albums I saw in every end of decade list 10 years ago, again!?”

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 14 September 2019 05:31 (four years ago) link

Even them seem tired writing about those albums.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 14 September 2019 05:34 (four years ago) link

Only 33 albums in here are from 2010-2019 btw

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 14 September 2019 05:37 (four years ago) link

It’s almost as if writers gravitate towards the music of their teenage years.

Siegbran, Saturday, 14 September 2019 11:02 (four years ago) link

So familiarity doesn't breed contempt at all.

I still listen to OPM every now and then.
