everybody owned this record in high school and it had robert smith from the cure on it. a popular victory for sullen goths

obv this is the record after box car racer where tom discovered he really loved fugazi and it shows in the two songs i'm considering voting for ("obvious," "asthenia")

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 19 September 2019 23:59 (four years ago) link

i saw you again and again and again

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 20 September 2019 00:18 (four years ago) link

Great drumming on this album. I saw them play a small club behind this, with Bubba Sparxxx (!) the other act on the bill.

i also love "easy target," they played it on the radio before the album came out for some reason? and i thought "oh shit, this is gonna be the best blink record" and i was right. it's v simple but tom's guitar playing is really atmospheric in a way it straight up wasn't before this album

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 October 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

one of the best cases of a band completely reinventing themselves

flopson, Wednesday, 2 October 2019 18:53 (four years ago) link

you'd think going from pop punk to dark experimental post-hardcore would mean they would stretch out and try on many hats but instead they just zero in on this totally iconic new sound and lock into it for p much the whole album

flopson, Wednesday, 2 October 2019 18:55 (four years ago) link

Stands up. I'm going to have to think about this more than I expected.

Great drumming on this album.

Agreed and I think this is what let me down on the one when I read some favorable comparisons to this album. I wanted more of Barker's drumming on this album. I'm not even bothered by the programmed beats on the new one, just the way they seemed to be pushed so far back in the mix even when I do like them.

better than any fugazi album imo

this was where I got off the bus. the fucking cover was enough. I like the chorus of I Miss You though.

burned into my brain

your original display name is still visible (Left), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 16:20 (one year ago) link

this was the soundtrack to early puberty along with that pink album i can never spell. i felt the band and i were growing up together (didn't know they were over twice my age) and that first horny tom verse gave me some strange new feelings

your original display name is still visible (Left), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 16:39 (one year ago) link

turned out to have longer legs than I think anyone anticipated, fans and probably band included

That bit in Feeling This where they Tom is waaay off-mic under a big drumbeat completes a trilogy of UK hits that do this (cf. Hotlegs' Neanderthal Man and The Goodmen's Give It Up)

you can see me from westbury white horse, Tuesday, 11 October 2022 16:47 (one year ago) link

so this still fucking rules and dammit tom is still hot in spite of everything. and his weird mannerisms are all over multiple genres now

your original display name is still visible (Left), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 17:01 (one year ago) link

OK it's not wall to wall bangers as you go on, not all the proggy stuff works and i get it girls are so cruel aren't you like 30. but still a solid album with a handful of all timers

your original display name is still visible (Left), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 17:23 (one year ago) link

Yeah I've never cared about the second half so much. Used to play tracks 1-8 all the time once upon a time though

you can see me from westbury white horse, Tuesday, 11 October 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

the last four songs are the best ones!

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 17:34 (one year ago) link

it does pick up again but not sure I'd go that far, maybe it's the relative unfamiliarity of the songs to me- I started this way more than ever I finished it. I assume you're not including the live anthem part 2 (which is fun) as one of the 4

your original display name is still visible (Left), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 17:43 (one year ago) link

lol no i just think “easy target”/“all of this” is a dope suite, the peak of the record, “here’s your letter” is the better of the two hoppus-songs on the record, and “i’m lost without you” achieves the “shoegaze epic” feel it’s going for, ultimately uh “losing” itself in clouds of guitar riffs and drum fills

album’s appeal (and ava’s appeal if you’re a dumbass who likes them like me) is at least partly that it feels smartly constructed even though it is very very very dumb

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 11 October 2022 18:57 (one year ago) link

I don’t even like BLink 182, but the quiet-loud dynamics on some of these tracks is spectacular.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 12 October 2022 17:58 (one year ago) link

rip jerry finn really in the conversation for the goat alt rock producers

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 12 October 2022 18:53 (one year ago) link

Apparently this tour is plagued by the same dynamic pricing bullshit as Springsteen's, so a whole new generation of fans are discovering how shitty Ticketmaster is. Seeing reports of up to $800-$900 per ticket. Jesus fuck. I like Blink and saw them when they toured with Green Day, they aren't worth $50 as a live act. Especially now that Tom is only doing this to raise money for his UFO company, I'm highly skeptical they are suddenly going to be a better live act.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 14 October 2022 20:06 (one year ago) link

very sympathetic while also thinking anyone paying $300 for a blink-182 show is clowning themselves hard

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 14 October 2022 21:25 (one year ago) link

so yes you’re otm jon
