are any of these actually good? i clicked a couple out of curiosity after they appeared on a youtube sidebar and thought nothing of them either way. but now they periodically pop up on my youtube homepage whether i demonstrate any interest or not, like those chilledcow 'lo-fi hip-hop: chill beats to study + relax to' (or however it's labeled) streams. the example above is one of the ones i clicked (b/c the original song is great) and while personally i don't think it adds or detracts anything compared to the original i'm not sure where it would rank in the grand scheme of the trend among its enthusiasts. but oh is it a trend: the uploader of that video has dedicated their entire channel to such uploads, which seem to routinely rack up anywhere from dozens to hundreds of thousands of views.

like, maybe best understood as an inversion of nightcore? but i actually loved a small number of nightcore edits.

please also feel free to use this thread as a place to discuss the use of aesthetics derived from east asian animation to (re-)package black american art for a young, deracialized* audience

(* or perhaps simply white, as long as the entertainment industries' default 'white = mass-appeal' assumption continues unabated)

i’m a huge fan of the ford & lopatin mixtapes where they do this, so im actually pretty excited that the collective labour of anonymous anime chill beats youtube music movement is being enlisted in doing this to every track

I can’t stop thinking about “(Slow + Reverb)” songs on YouTube. There is this sense of collective anxiety that is driving people to watch these slightly toned down version of already chill songs that’s really endearing to me. Most of the videos are of emo rap and r&b with maybe a stray Tame Impala track snuck in there as well. The videos, and their comment sections, feel like young people attempting to retreat from a future in which they know they’re economically fucked. Yet, because they’re barely adults, the immediate place to go isn’t to childhood, but to only a few years in the past. Right before it became clear they were going to be stuck in this neoliberal trap.
