Bizarre that this is divisive ... so obviously great

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 25 December 2020 23:23 (three years ago) link

part of it is that the kanye track comes second, and it’s by far the low light

la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Saturday, 26 December 2020 00:02 (three years ago) link

feels like an album that people in the future are gonna claimed they loved right away lol

la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Saturday, 26 December 2020 00:03 (three years ago) link

It’s better than die lit imo and people did that with that one one

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 26 December 2020 00:31 (three years ago) link

this playboy carti is interesting

who does the production or does he do producer by committee?

was thinking hard like what do these beats remind me of and there's parts where the synth sounds and melodies remind me of Boards of Canada

this feels pretty exciting

why do people hate this?

I don't necessarily have the facilities to understand this style completely

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 26 December 2020 16:50 (three years ago) link

'Inconsistency' seems to be the main gripe.

pomenitul, Saturday, 26 December 2020 18:04 (three years ago) link

It’s an incoherent criticism imo. The album has a cohesive unique sound and there are no tracks id really skip (tolerance for guests ymmv). People are just being confronted with something new and don’t know what to make of it

Weirdly it’s divided some of his more fervent fans as well, but I think it’s because he’s moved past the sound of “die lit” which despite having self-styled themselves as a vanguard for they don’t really want him to move past

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 26 December 2020 18:10 (three years ago) link

i think another part of it is that the sound whole lotta red pretty distinct from the sound of carti's leaks, which people fell in love with. there isn't anything on here that has the vibe of "pissy pamper," for example.

la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Saturday, 26 December 2020 18:18 (three years ago) link

Yea that’s what I mean .. he’s on some next sound. Tho a couple leaks did make the tracklist iirc

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 26 December 2020 18:47 (three years ago) link

huh I feel like the production has a pretty definite aesthetic, which prompted me to ask if it was one producer (though I see it's multiples)

I don't know anything about him really other than magnolia so it's interesting to hear ppl are upset

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 26 December 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link

People are just being confronted with something new and don’t know what to make of it

In all honesty this is where I am. I haven't given it a full chance yet, but it's a pretty big swerve in style

Thinking abt this Jzone thread

I used to bag on artists making 180 degree change till I hit a point it felt like everything most wanted or expected from me made me want to torch my studio and what I really wanted to do was exactly what they didn't want. With experience now those artists inspire me the most.

The new Carti is the only rap album I've really liked this year.

it sounds like rico nasty to me

flopson, Sunday, 27 December 2020 05:47 (three years ago) link

some combination of the first sremmlife and 1000gecs is what keep coming to mind for me. I agree, I like pretty much every track on this and it moves on to the next before anything ever gets a chance to get stale

its what i wish rico sounded like to me lol

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 27 December 2020 06:29 (three years ago) link

which, same thing, but still

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 27 December 2020 06:29 (three years ago) link

i don't really see it as a big change in style, it sounds like the leaks mixed with the production rico or other soundcloud rappers get.

ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 27 December 2020 11:52 (three years ago) link

and of course it's bette music.

ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 27 December 2020 11:53 (three years ago) link

better*

ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 27 December 2020 11:54 (three years ago) link

i didn't keep up with the leaks or anything but to me it sounds just like he's just leaning even further into his existing idiosyncrasies rather than it being any sort of left turn

really good album

la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Sunday, 27 December 2020 13:48 (three years ago) link

I'm listening now and it is really great (maybe a xmas release wasn't ideal? lol). But idk maybe it's cuz I listened to the s/t a lot more than Die Lit, and I've never heard any leaks, but I feel like he's using his voice in a bunch of different ways on this, e.g., his super raspy voice on Rockstar Made.

rob, Sunday, 27 December 2020 15:03 (three years ago) link

i mean it just seems like a fairly natural continuation of what he was already doing even though there's new stuff there

ufo, Sunday, 27 December 2020 15:07 (three years ago) link

Ok yeah that makes sense, it's not like he put out an album of ballads or something

rob, Sunday, 27 December 2020 15:12 (three years ago) link

never heard die lit but this just sounds like carti to me

||||||||, Sunday, 27 December 2020 15:53 (three years ago) link

i hope the deluxe is only with the baby voice though

ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 27 December 2020 16:01 (three years ago) link

This is way more aggro than die lit or the leaks, come on

There’s a reason stans keep saying the second half is “better” and it’s cuz “place” is the leak aesthetic whereas most of the rest is in the new style ... and I don’t agree that it’s just standard production, there’s clearly a curated sound here that separates it from the earlier stuff

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 27 December 2020 19:47 (three years ago) link

the whole vibe of the album is a midpoint between the leaks and stuff like this

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 28 December 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

I see some common sonic touchpoints but that’s a pretty disparate list of “influences” to suggest it’s a more conservative “midpoint” between the leaks and those. More like a ramped up version of those

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 28 December 2020 20:33 (three years ago) link

Really I think the producer-auteurs prob most responsible for this sound are the working on dying guys who’ve been doing uzi’s shit but they went in a new direction here

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 29 December 2020 01:49 (three years ago) link

it's a great album, no doubt about that

flopson, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 03:40 (three years ago) link

i'm starting to think so too. can't stop thinking about "punk monk"

shabbat bloody shabbat (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 December 2020 03:59 (three years ago) link

It’s probably my favorite rap album this year, haven’t been knocked back by something like this in awhile

Yeah this or EA

tempted to stop my end of year listening and slot this in given the collective shine but i think ahma wait for 21

Doom homage title is weird to me & counter the traditional spirit of these threads frankly but ppl get mad at me for pointing this out every year and I no longer care

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 4 January 2021 18:10 (three years ago) link

lol i typed & deleted the same thing cuz i didn't wanna come off as a dick but it's true

yeah, this is the main reason why i bumped the thread and didn't just start a new one.

there's gotta be something we can use that doesn't have "coochie" in it
