yeah comparing catalogs is a bummer bc thin lizzy dont have the sheer beef that Skynyrd hasthin lizzy rules but fuck man, skynyrd can pretty much take all comers, hands down

Like both really.Have tended to prefer the early 3 piece to the twin guitar Lizzy but may need to reinvestigate teh later stuff more.BUt am a bit partial to Eric bell era.
Wish I'd seen more of the film on Skynyrd taht was on Sky Arts yesterday. Missed the beginning and was a bit falling asleepthink I switched over to a couple of things to avoid ads and didn't get back fast enough so missed more chunks.Do like the early stuff at least. & live . I know 1st couple of lps are great, may be good up to the plane crash but not familiar with the later stuff of that era.

Also forgive me if I'm wrong, but "Thin Lizzy has two great songs" sounds like a take that was informed strictly by classic rock radio.

Lizzy's peaks are higher
Skynyrd's generally underrated as an albums band
Lizzy is sui generis
Skynyrd's a southern rock band, a very good one
not voting

I was going to say I didn't really know Skynyrd beyond the 3-4 songs they play on classic rock radio, but I just checked and I didn't know the titles (Call Me the Breeze?) and they have a lot more songs that get play. I should probably explore them a bit more. Anyway, I love their sound (beefy hard southern rock) maybe better than the actual songs. Those records sound great and the band is tight. Hope you like the blues, though.
Lizzy has a great sound as well. Love the rhythm section and that twin guitar attack. Agree with JCLC that Lizzy's peaks are higher and the reason is Skynyrd don't have Phil Lynott. His stuff just means so much to me: the little asides he sings on stuff like The Boys Are Back in Town and really all over Jailbreak just kill me. All the fairly standard romantic songs given a twist with an outsider's perspective. You never get the sense in a Skynyrd song they are singing about a specific person the way you do in Lizzy. Lynott such a romantic.
Both great pool shooting/beer drinking bands. Skynyrd influenced a million terrible tone cowboys and bar bands. Lizzy a big influence on the evolution of metal.
Lizzy wins.
― The Traveling Wilkes-Barre's (PBKR), Sunday, 19 January 2020 14:08 (four years ago) link
Both great bands; preferences might depend mostly on tolerance for southern rock.
Skynyrd doubters who only know the radio hits should listen to the first album for a better sense of their range. The second album is just as good; the third and fourth were rushed but show how they were continuing to develop a sound that was already rock-solid on the debut. You can ignore everything released after 1977.
I love Lizzy's twin guitar leads, songwriting, and lead vocals, but Skynyrd's are better, and Skynyrd swings harder.
― Brad C., Sunday, 19 January 2020 15:09 (four years ago) link
Skynyrd hardly put a foot wrong 1973-1977, they were so ferocious. The 42-minute Old Grey Whistle Test performance of theirs on youtube is Exhibit A. Since I learned my rock from US aor radio I know Lizzy from "those two" songs, which are obviously great, but further investigation is needed. I have to look up how many albums they have (gee, way more than I thought). I remember being flabbergasted to find out Lizzy were Irish, bc especially in the vocals they seemed very specifically American.

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 19 January 2020 15:56 (four years ago) link
Allmans are pretty sui generis themselves, often approaching things with a feather touch, but that's not always the mood I'm in. Skynyrd is always a mood I'm in.

Despite my general disinterest in lyrics, this is the main reason I'm voting LS. The lyrics to "Was I Right Or Wrong" are a perfect example; just the couplet "Then one sunny day, the man, he looked my way/And everything that I dreamed of, it was real" is so brilliant.
― shared unit of analysis (unperson), Sunday, 19 January 2020 16:32 (four years ago) link
Van Zandt could write affecting songs about childhood that are surprising in their lack of irony or condescension: "Simple Man," "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" (compare the latter to the saccharine "Mister Bojangles" to see how Van Zandt's life experience improved his treatment of a similar theme).
He could also be persuasively vicious, sometimes in unexpected ways, as when the snarling "Saturday Night Special" short-circuits the aggression of gun culture.

Thankfully, it's not in the realm of that story "Sort by Controversial", where finding the biggest 50% up/50% down-voted Reddit items will serve as the means to tear a relatively like-minded community apart, but I could totally see Skynyrd vs The Lizz as getting quite contentious here.
(Imagine the vote's closeness had Lynott and Co chosen to call themselves Thyn Lyzzy).

oh hi bitch. your special snowflake taste or the fact that you ran a pavement poll have nothing to do with the very reasonable assertion that indie rock fans would prefer thin lizzy over the band who wrote 'sweet home alabama,' which has undeniably acquired a racist knuckle-dragger aura from decades of willful association with racist knuckle-draggers, no matter how ardently you burn for lynyrd skynyrd or how hard they boogie (there are a lot of great 70s rock bands who didn't write 'sweet home alabama'!), and acting like you're scandalized or shocked about the results of this poll is just another performance of your tiresome and intensely egotistical shtick of having oh-so-uncategorizable music taste.
