Doc Scott and Other Essential Medical Professionals: The Rolling 2020 Drum and Bass/Jungle/Rollers/Liquid/170+ thread

With the Covid-19 pandemic basically wiping out live music across the world, I thought I'd start a running list of DnB events, be they livestreams from DJs' homes, new albums and tracks coming out, quarantine mixes, anything.

Doc Scott has taken to doing free Facebook livestreams on Sundays, and just now he announced he's donating half of any donations during those streams to Covid-19 research/relief. He said next week is going to be an old skool session, which coming from Doc fuggin Scott, that's going to be something for sure.

Also, new nCamargo full length coming 4/10/2020, gonna be called Horizon Cold Line. I've heard a few tunes from it and it sounds like it's going to shred. There are a few two minute clips on his Soundcloud.

IlX’s most unfashionable genre is enjoying an absolutely bumper start to 2020.

Search: anything on Skank and Bass or Grid.

My favourite artist of the last 6 months has been the delightfully named Nick the Lot.

Check also OaT, an artist using actual chopped up beats.

just checking in to report that i was digging under the bins in the recesses of the shop's back room, when I stumbled upon the following strong vg+ gems being offered for $1 apiece

cloud 9 - jazzmin (tango remix) / teach me to fly (moving shadow)
dream team - stamina / warrior (suburban base)
dynamic duo - shadow og / shadow revamp (intalektive)
hidden agenda. - swing time / the wedge (metalheadz)
j majik - repertoire / shiatsu (metalheadz)
remarc - rip / ice cream & syrup (suburban base)
seiji - density / taste (reinforced)
dj solo - pressure / pressure peshay remix (mo wax)
dj solo & aura - take heed / summer madness (mo wax)
2 bad mice - kaotic chemistry 2LP (sm:)e)

the last one was $3 so it came to $12.93 out the door

I could say it was a good day

sadly tho i have acquired no new jungle this year

did acquire a couple of 4Q 2019 records worth a mention (did i mention these last year? i can't find the thread)

ok the post-dubstep vocal effects on this one are quite played out imo and the rhythm's not so great

but the "jungle tekkno" on the flip is totally worth it

this guy is new to me but he comes through w a nice blend of chopped breaks and "logical progression" style atmospheres

and he rolls the beats too

the late great, Monday, 30 March 2020 18:41 (one month ago) link

I don't think there was a rolling rollers (ha) thread the past two years, unless someone else started one and I never saw it. Or were you using the 2017 thread after its sell-by date?

I'd pay $12.93 for almost anything off Sm;le unheard, just for nostalgia-- I used to see those records in my local bins but I didn't DJ or have access to any dnb nights at the time, always wanted to pick one up but never got around to it. That's a hell of a list of dollar pickups.

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Monday, 30 March 2020 18:54 (one month ago) link

yeah and they were all together, in a neat little stack, mixed with some other good stuff that was too beat to pick up

the late great, Monday, 30 March 2020 18:59 (one month ago) link

The Coco Bryce b-side is pretty good, I think I've heard it in a like-minded mix at some point. It could almost blend into some old skool stuff. The a-side of that one, the vocals didn't bother me so much as the four on the floor. I gotta have that a lot slower, or a lot faster. lol

Listening to the Lynch Kingsley, this is good stuff, like if Omni Music had cleaner drum sounds.

Haha the first release on OaT's Soundcloud is a minimal techno EP. It's good! I'll get to the actual dnb stuff shortly.

Platinum Leaks

Apple Music has been pushing a lot of Peshay’s new stuff at me 16 year old me and present times me are very pleased about this.

^^intriguing. Didn't know he was still on it. My 16 year old me will check it out!

It seems to be a burst of productivity.

Here’s an Apple Music playlist of all the new tracks I could find. There’s a lot of great Hoover noises.

He put out a collab full length last year with Sense that I didn't really ever give my full attention to.

Working from home the last week or so have been listening lots to In Order To Dance 6, Platinum Breakz and those Logical Progression/Earth comps so looking forward to checking out recommendations in this thread

groovypanda, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 13:27 (one month ago) link

Oh shit I still have that In Order To Dance 6 cd! Played the shit out of that one. That's got Locusts 'No-One in The World' jam w/ the Carpenters sample right?

Yeah. It's a great compilation

groovypanda, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:08 (one month ago) link

^That is a ridiculously good vinyl haul up thread. Swing Time/The Wedge by Hidden Agenda is one of my all time favourite 12s. I also have the Kaotic Chemistry LSD EP on CD single.

the article don, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 18:00 (one month ago) link

cracking haul.
not jealous at all.
not that i would know what to look for to be honest.
as i don't do the vinyl thing i have to cope with the fact that yesterday i randomly found a rather fantastic d-n-b remix of 'intergalatic' by the beastie boys (by "prisoners of technology") on a freebie cd that i had in the attic.
been up there for 20 years, and had never heard it before.

I've been caning Routes From The Jungle on walks for last couple of months. It remains one of the best compilations of any kind. Disc 1 in particular is entirely dud free.

Open Your Mind (Remix) is like a whole rave in one track and I think Bludclot Artattack (Dark Mix) might be my all time favourite jungle tune. That and Dark Stranger perfectly representing '93 darkside. Actually what Bodysnatch is worth checking because Secret Summer Fantasy is also a high point among high points.

started the thread with bad info. Doc Scott is going to stream live Saturday (tomorrow night) at 20:00 GMT (3:00 PM EST).

Solid Gold: how the beat science on Photek's 'Modus Operandi' redefined drum & bass

Great new piece about Photek's magnum opus (and a good reminder to spin it once again).

Seba doing a live set on Bassdrive in about 90 minutes. I'm not sure I've heard Seba as a DJ?

Missed the whole thing because I can't figure out Twitter (lol old), but Prototypes did a 24 hour streaming set to benefit the NHS ending yesterday at 7:00 GDT. Sponsored by DnB Arena and looks like it's still up on YouTube in pieces:

some of these are still available to download.

really enjoyed the goldie one earlier.

Good selection. Goldie’s Essential Mic from April 2007 is a banger too

Is there a version of DnB that sounds distinctly like 2020 and not retro?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:12 (one month ago) link

I'm not sure if you mean less emphasis on the jungle breaks? Most new stuff coming out now is less jungley. That nCamargo record would be a good place to start, or try a comp like Sick Music 2020 on Hospital, or Select Files #5 on CIA. Or tune into Bassdrive or Jungletrain, their DJs get a lot of promos and are usually playing really new records.

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:31 (one month ago) link

I don't know that I have something specific in mind, just something modern and fresh

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:36 (one month ago) link

It's still taking inspiration from classic soul, but with drum machines taking over for the JBs cut up breaks, it does sound more 21st century than, say, "Drumz '95."
^ Inja, "Sanctuary" from that Sick Music 2020 comp
^ MI-KH, "Dreamscape" Command Strange remix
^ L-Side, "The Void"

All tunes from 2020, not sure how fresh they'll sound to you but I think they're a good overview of much of the genre currently.

Someday I'll learn how to embed

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:46 (one month ago) link

I like that this Sick Music comp is a bit more melodic rather than just straight up tech darkness

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:53 (one month ago) link

Lenzman's full length from last year, Bobby, would probably be up your alley. More atmospheric than straight up melodic, but kinda jazzy and smooth. For actual melody, either Etherwood or Riya, although their albums were both a few years ago.

"Higher Love" by Hybrid Minds feat Charlotte Haining is great too, that's from last year: (Bcee remix, and no, I did not learn how to embed yet)

Speaking of old sounding stuff, today is the 21st anniversary of Kemistry's passing, and Storm put a great set of the two of them at the Blue Note NYC in '98 on her Soundcloud and Mixcloud pages.

Having a sort out of CDs over the weekend and came across those Moving Shadow sampler mix CDs that I'd totally forgotten about. Still sound great too

groovypanda, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 10:11 (three weeks ago) link

yeah, unfortunately i only have 98.1 mixed by Rob Playford of Moving Shadow mixes.
sounds really good.
the others are definitely on my lookout list when the charity shops reo-open.
