don't want to pollute the thread with embeds, but here are the covers i voted for. all of the covers i chose are songs i didn't wind up picking for the tracks ballot

rotary connection - 'burning of the midnight lamp': https://youtu.be/NSvgdzgDxSA
grand and operatic with gorgeous vocals from minnie riperton, breathes new vital life into hendrix's hippy-dippiest track.

rickie lee jones - 'up from the skies': https://youtu.be/kRNcdgszivI
just a really good matchup between song and artist. rickie has a lot of fun with the groovy lyrics.

living colour - crosstown traffic: https://youtu.be/9so3U_27tVo
a faithful cover that i voted for because crosstown traffic was my final cut from the main poll and i wanted to honor it lol. didn't vote for best new hendrix, but vernon reid is as good a pick as any.

I was one of the Scannell voters, I do like the regular version of it as well - I had the CD with the purple cover at the top there, that really is some terrible '90s CD art!

edgard varese-type beat (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 20:24 (three years ago) link

I had AYE at #2 over EL on my ballot but on reflection I think the latter edges it, especially if you go by the original tracklisting (I've only ever owned versions of the debut with the early single A and B sides tacked on the end). Electric Ladyland really is one of the all-time great double albums.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 20:29 (three years ago) link

Sides 3 and 4 of Electric Ladyland are the pinnacle of rock

Joey Corona (Euler), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:05 (three years ago) link

Electric Ladyland drives me crazy. I think the backing vocals around 2:25 of Long Hot Summer Night are my least favorite thing Jimi put on tape.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:21 (three years ago) link

'Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)' is 'What'd I Say'. 'Burning of the Midnight Lamp' is 'Come as You Are' slowed down with wah wah. I don't know how Jimi stole it from the future.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:35 (three years ago) link

Ladyland is killer start to finish

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:37 (three years ago) link

come on let the good times roll is one of his very best solos, the moment where it kicks into high gear after shifting up a half step is rock city.

burning of the midnight lamp is fine, but better as a rotary connection song lol

Being into a Hendrix poll and not being into Electric Ladyland is befuddling. I took House Burning Down off my ballot at the last minute and now regret it just thinking about it.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:12 (three years ago) link

Yeah totally
like, dig:
the first 2 albums are like the thrilling countdown to blastoff & Ladyland is the moment when the rocket takes off

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:15 (three years ago) link

let’s all say “dig” a lot in this rollout

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:16 (three years ago) link

i rate the 3 studio albums chronologically, but had Band of Gypsys #1. I think my love for jimi is rooted in what sounds great on guitar in a 3-piece. EL has great moments but is a departure from that and sounds a little too loose overall for me. For example, 'All Along the Watchtower' has great guitar moments, but it sounds more like a santana song, and you can't, in my experience, have as much fun playing it alone on guitar in your bedroom. that last bit is probably the unfair bias i bring to this poll.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:31 (three years ago) link

Not so great to use 'great' over and over in that post, but i'm fuckin wired on iced tea and listening to EL all the way through.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:40 (three years ago) link

Speaking of Santana, I was just thinking today about much it sucks that Hendrix had to die, robbing us of a collab live album of him, Santana, and Buddy Miles jamming on a volcano in Hawaii.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 00:28 (three years ago) link

we got the santana + rob thomas collabo we all desired, but it only made us hunger more for the hendrix + sugar ray collabo that can never happen.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 02:05 (three years ago) link

so help me i will turn this car around

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 02:11 (three years ago) link

like I’m guessing “Still Raining, Still Dreaming” doesn’t make the poll, but in context it’s the glue between the astronomical wilds of Side 3 and the earthly doom of Side 4, with God’s wrath finally severing the two in a slight return. That solo! Blues as inner space.

edgard varese-type beat (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

Little Wing was my #5 and I knew it was going to be high on the ILX poll. Surprising to me is that is not a unique ILX take: it's Jimi's fourth most played song on Spotify, higher than Fire or Foxey Lady.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

i should mention that i totally forgot until now about mr. mcfall's chamber's version of "little wing" from their "like the milk" album, which surely would have made my covers shortlist if i'd remembered. it's not on youtube, but it is exceeding fine.

niebiesko czarni - purple hazy
billy tipton memorial sax quartet - all manic
rozz williams & gitane demone - manic depression
screaming trees - love or confusion
emmylou harris - may this be love
the main squeeze - fire
john klemmer - third stone from the sun
dick dale - third stone from the sun
shockabilly - are you experienced?
gilberto gil - up from the skies
mr. mcfall's chamber - little wing
richard lloyd - castles made of sand
open hand - have you ever been (to electric ladyland)
chico magnetic band - crosstown traffic
earthless - come on (let the good times roll)
living colour - burning of the midnight lamp
kimmo pohjonen - driving south
prince - villanova junction -> peach -> rock me baby
bob dylan - dolly dagger
the white stripes - hear my train a comin'
alain blesing - 1983
eddie hazel - voodoo chile
shibusashirazu orchestra - little wing
miles davis- mademoiselle mabry

I talk too much about teaching, but I will say that showing the "Star Spangled Banner" Woodstock clip to a classroom of nine-year-olds was as much fun as I ever had. And if you gave them enough context, talking about what was going on in the country at the time, they got it.
