Electronic artists, who rarely produce for other artists, producing in a genre/style out of their comfort zone.

Sorry, for the weird title. Remember english is not my first language and I don't know how else to explain it in a few words, here's some examples of what I'm looking for:

- Jamie Woon - Night Air + Lady Luck + Street produced by Burial

- Jessie Ware - 110% produced by Julio Bashmore

- Jose James - Visions of Violet + Blackmagic produced by Flying Lotus

- Neneh Cherry - Blank Project + Broken Politics albums produced by Four Tet

- Kindness - World, You Need A Change Of Mind album co-produced by Erol Alkan

These are albums or songs produced by famous electronic artists/producers/djs who are more well known for their own solo work than by their producer credits. Some of these are one-offs, too... Burial, Julio Bashmore, Flying Lotus haven't really produced for any other artist iirc, other than these examples.

Four Tet and Erol Alkan might not count as they've produced several other things but these albums in particular are highlights imho and quite different to their usual style. So I'm also interested in hearing that sort of examples; famous artists producing songs in genres or styles out of their comfort zone.

The new FKA Twigs album has Nicolas Jaar, as well as Koreless (and Daniel Lopatin and Skrillex, but they do plenty of production for vocalists).

Also...Yeezus.

Danny Brown 'Atrocity Exhibition' had beats by Petite Noir and Rustie

Those are good ones!

Nicolas Jaar also produced Buzzy Lee - Coolhand which could count as indiepop.

I have no idea if he does much other outside production, but Vladislav Delay produced Mirel Wagner's second album, one of my all-time favorites. That's more of a traditional engineering/mixing role though, as opposed to the producer making the instrumentals.

FlyLo has done a bunch of rap beats btw, and of course the Thundercat albums:

A couple of late 70s female fronted synth pop excursions from generally not quite so pop dudes.

Leda - Welcome To Joyland (1978) produced (pseudonymously as Hacoon Mail) by Peter Baumann.

Ann Steel - The Ann Steel Album (1979) produced by Roberto Cacciapaglia.

Arca also produced FKA Twigs' first EPs of course, and was part of the Yeezus all-stars.

Barbara Panther - s/t was co-produced by her and Matthew Herbert.

Four Tet also produced James Yorkston's second album. There's nothing Four Tetty about it at all, as I recall.

maybe Lee Perry producing The Clash was an early example of this.

Just double-checked and Jaar produced the whole Facepaint EP. Also just found out she's Steven Spielberg's daughter.

Ah yes! Sorry I did know that, completely blanked out. I guess Jose James isn't too far off from the more jazzy/chill hop style FlyLo had in his first eps too so maybe let's scratch that example.

Sebastian composed and produced pretty much all of Charlotte Gainsbourg's Rest.

I am not especially convinced that most of these producers were remotely out of their comfort zone on these records, Arca especially.

Four Tet's work with Omar Souleyman immediately came to mind but he did as little as possible in terms of musical input.

Jeff Mills was way way out of his comfort zone working with Tony Allen.

Matt DC, Friday, 8 May 2020 23:04 (four years ago) link

yeah i ignored the comfort zone bit with arca, my bad for messing with the thread theme.

maybe el guincho helping produce some rosalia hits fits better?

sleight return (voodoo chili), Friday, 8 May 2020 23:08 (four years ago) link

one year passes...

Was listening to Dj Koze and apparently his current most listened tracks on spotify are actually of a German rapper called Marteria, he produced three or four songs off his new album.
