cool parts of songs that get lopped out of the live performance for no real reason...

when I went to see that Metallica drive-in concert (SHUT FUCK UP), and heard "Battery", I noticed they did something they've been doing in recent years, which is cutting the melodic riff before the solo. I hate that cut because it's a nice little prelude to chaos and madness that comes after. Naturally, they also got rid of the "Sweet Home Alabama" part of "Four Horsemen" years ago, but quite honestly, fuck that part.

but what other songs do bands chop the fuck out of live for reasons ostensibly other than shortening the song? I'm not talking about playing pre-recordings or unplayable parts of songs - talking about shit they could easily play and just...leave out.

and how it impacts your enjoyment of the song one way or the other.

worst example of this was at an already disappointing Meshuggah concert in 2008, opening for Ministry, same year they released Obzen.

I was dying to hear "Bleed". they play it, and they're about to get to the cool part at the very end with the insane chunk polyrhythms...and then they just....stop. the song ends.

wanted to leave immediately. next time I saw them, in 2016, they played the whole thing. guess my letters got to them.

saw Nigerian afropop singer Yemi Alade on her Amsterdam date two years ago. great show, she’s the hardest working woman in show business, she does all of her hits, finally she gets to one of her biggest, “Ferrari”, in which she lists all the things she expects her prospective lover to do and buy for her. everyone is ready to sing along at the top of their lungs to the line “open supermarkt for me for Netherlands” in the second verse - what easier way to bond with your Dutch audience, right? - but no, she cuts it short and moves on to the next song.

I read somewhere that the Rolling Stones have never played the opening bit from 45 of "Jumping Jack Flash" live, always starting with the main riff.

lol breastcrawl. wonder if she realized what she did there!

oh, even weirder one.

Faith No More did "Midlife Crisis" when I saw them in 2015. all of the song except the part after the first chorus that goes "IT'S A MIDLIFE CRISIS", aka, the only place the title is said.

it wasn't where they cut into Boz Scagg's "Lowdown" midsong either....way before that!

Another Stones one: I don't think they've ever included the cowbell part on live versions of "Honky Tonk Women".
