sometimes I think it's her best

Few artists emerge with a first single as fully formed as "Kerosene."

I love "Kerosene" but I was also glad when she added Steve Earle to the writing credit because his song was the first thing I thought of when I heard it.

Hard to say "best" but, but the first two are still my favorites. This one seems tailor made for summer drives. The stretch of "I Wanna Die" > "Love Is Looking For You" > "Mama, I'm Alright" is something else.

The two dirges - "Bring Me Down" and "There's a Wall" - are the only ones I could do without, and even those seem to have their place in the album and make the songs that follow stand out more.

Interesting...those are the two songs she wrote with her dad, apparently.

Always loved this imagery in "Charlie"

So you treat your love like a firefly, like it only gets to shine, for a little while
Catch it in a mason jar with holes in the top and run like hell to show it off

Going with "New Strings." She wrote it solo, the melody's infectious, the bridge absolutely rips, and the lyrics showed she knew classic country while bringing in those specific location details that still make the "starting off on your own/open road" trope feel personal.

She sings this line like a young pro: the glides, the stresses, the release.

First thing I thought of when I heard "Kerosene" was The Godfathers' "Birth, School, Work, Death"

avril should cover "over you", it basically sounds like one of her whiny ballads anyway (this isn't an insult to the song or avril)
