Louis Cole, Tom Misch, Jacob Collier, and that whole "former jazz band geek all grown up and ready to plug into speed fusion boogie" aesthetic

Of all the newer music, this stuff is the closest to plugging directly into my id.

jacob collier is likely a genius, but by god is his music bad

voodoo chili, Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:24 (one month ago) link

There's a video of him talking chord voicing with Herbie Hancock and it sort of occurred to me that he's a bit like the Herbie who skips straight to "Beat Wise" without really putting in the decades building up to the big sellout.

Which is also one of the things I think defines this strain of music.

music for people who thought Whiplash was a great film about jazz, rather than an okay film about competitive sports

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:32 (one month ago) link

yeah i saw that video with herbie, and he clearly has a supernaturally advanced understanding of harmony and can break down complex concepts into semi-plain english. makes me think his true destiny is to become the 21st century version of leonard bernstein–w/r/t his music appreciation tv specials, even if he doesn't make music worth hearing lol

voodoo chili, Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:35 (one month ago) link

xp idk pretty much every person i know who actually went to music school and saw whiplash couldn't suspend disbelief

voodoo chili, Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:36 (one month ago) link

jacob collier might be the single most hateful musician in the world

That's a pretty low blow.

Maybe it was a mistake to wrap Collier into this, since his version of "fun" sounds a great deal more constrained than other examples.

Search: Louis Cole, Clown Core, JD Beck & Domi, some Mononeon, about half of Vulfpeck (although I almost never listen to this stuff sans video)

Destroy: Jacob Collier, Scary Pockets, Andrew Huang, Jacob Collier, Marc Rebillet, Jacob Collier, the rest of Vulfpeck, Jacob Collier

Honorable mention to my two favorite youtube channels that are strictly comedy + drumming (+ life lessons), not vehicles for music videos:
-Rational Funk w/Dave King
-Zackgrooves

I get it. Collier is the Pomplamoose of this genre.

And Scary Pockets is actually the Pomplamoose guy

collier has managed to invent music that's entirely chops, even if those chops are just showing off crazy harmonies for the sake of it or whatever. real shame he can't manage to put that talent to any good use at all

louis cole rules though and it feels kinda ridiculous to put him in the same sentence as collier, like his music is actually fun!

ufo, Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:54 (one month ago) link

Louis Cole has a genuine point of view and his own sound, I think he has yet to make his best record but he's incredible.

Does Bill Wurtz fall into this category or is he a little too weird and internety?

MarkoP, Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:58 (one month ago) link

having sat through his whole r&b album from last year, collier also just isn't very good at actually writing memorable melodies

ufo, Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:59 (one month ago) link

oh man the pomplamoose guy has a funk band now? that sounds terrifying

ufo, Thursday, 25 March 2021 15:01 (one month ago) link

Also a lot of this stuff falls into the category of "Stuff the guy from crying seems to be really into".

Many days, "Things" feels like that record to me. But yes, he's still got a bunch of hooks up his sleeve I feel.

Fun fact -- I learned from this podcast that the Pomplamoose guy was instrumental in motivating Louis Cole to start making videos and do his thing:

(mostly I wish the production & mixing was a bit better...when you're watching a video and seeing him play, it goes a long way toward tricking your ear & smoothing that over imo)

xp I have to think on some level he wants that sound? with Kamasi and Thundercat and others all in his corner, he has every available resource at his disposal

avatar of a kind of respectability homosexual culture (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 March 2021 15:17 (one month ago) link

Idk about that, sure he can get whoever he wants to play on it, but seems pretty committed to recording himself at home and mixing himself. I'm sure he'll keep getting better & better at that part.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 25 March 2021 15:30 (one month ago) link

These three artists all seem like Thundercat wannabes to me. I didn't make it more than 1:05 into any of the videos, though. Collier clearly the worst of the three — I could basically sum his shit up as "if 80s Herbie Hancock was Frank Zappa" — but it's all Not For Me.

Like, why would you listen to any of this when you could just listen to Slave or George Duke? (Or Chromeo, if Jacob Collier is the one doing the most for you?)
