Getting into more Irish folk has been on the top of my musical to-do list for 3 years now. I think I'll get started now.

Instead of "Traditional" I should've put "Intelligent," and then we could argue semantics.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 28 November 2002 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't make me start a new thread called Intelligent Irish folk etc.

Search anything with Martin Hayes on it.

Rener to thread!

'Irish Heartbeat' by Van and the Chieftains.

Lovely version of 'Carrickfergus' on it.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 28 November 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Rener is being blocked from ILXOR. Disaster.

I recommend Planxty records. In particular I recommend "The Well Below The Valley", the title track of which is the scariest folk tune of all time.

i'm back now. 'intelligent folk', nice.

search: live trad sessions in pubs. or anywhere else, but they're mostly in pubs.

regarding records, i'd recommend starting with the 1970s canon and work from there. SEARCH: *anything* by Planxty, Bothy Band, Andy Irvine. Patrick Street are very good too. if you like sean-nos singing, iarla o lionaird (who's also in afro-celt sound system) is excellent. martin hayes, mairtin o'connor, paddy keenan, vinnie kilduff, gerry o'connor, arty mcglynn, mary bergin, and davy spillane are all worth listening to. yes, trad is a slightly male-dominated world.

DESTROY: tendency towards over-production on some trad albums.

some trad rock can be good, but approach with caution. search: horslips, some (but not all) moving hearts. destroy: celtus.

i should mention Dervish because my brother plays with them. their singer is slightly over-mannered at times, but they're great nonetheless. they've recorded more stuff than i've ever listened to.

if you really like fiddle music, check out sean mcguire. also old recordings by michael coleman, james morrison and paddy killoran.

i might think of some more later.

"The Lonesome Touch" by Martin HAyes and Denis Cahill is a bit of a classic. Kila are amazing live: I haven't heard their recorded stuff but it's probably the business.

That would only force somebody (probably me) to post a Stupid Irish Folk Music thread.

Where do I go for 20s-30s Irish fiddlin' after Paddy Killoran and Michael Coleman?

ian, Monday, 6 October 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

(big fan of sessions at pubs, not so much contemporary recorded Irish music AFAIK.)

ian, Monday, 6 October 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

I've been getting really into the The Gloaming album recently. Kind of a contemporary trad supergroup featuring Iarla Ó Lionaird, Thomas Bartlett, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill. Contains fiddlin'! And drones.

actuallly -- interested to see this shout out to the gloaming. i listened to them a little and loved some of the tracks, was left cold by others. wasn't sure this was the kind of group ilx would like. but i'm listening again now. gaelic is a pretty language.

First Gloaming album still holds up imo but the follow-ups were kind of bland.

I put together a playlist of some old and some new things a while back: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6aC0rH8SInsvghcH1AdVCS?si=a-208aHmSiiP1asLswnTkg
