Scarface - "The Fix" - hip hop album of the year or what?

So it's got gorgeous soulful production reminiscent of, but not aping, the Blueprint with really strong tracks from Kanye West and the Neptunes (the latter a little out of character for their recent input). The whole album has a beautifully rounded feel with a balance between thuggery and sensitivity.

And it has a hot verse from Nas on it! "In between us" is the best thing he's been on it years! And what a hook, too.

The whole album is full of melodies. Dripping with 'em. Saturated, even - milkmen could actually whistle it.

And all that from an ex-Geto boy too.

i really like "my block" (helps that i saw it first as a music vid) and "in between us" (the nas verse does bust out with both fists up, it's like maybe the best thing i've ever heard by him)(ps i haven't heard a whole lotta nas). the faith hill neptunes thing did less for me, but it's pretty enough in the ol' neps light acoustic guitar + thump kinda way i suppose. haven't heard the rest. i really just wanted to answer this thread so i could predict that s. trife's gonna say something snarky about melody-saturation.

I love "My Block"

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 29 November 2002 01:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

haha Mitch, I totally don't think you mean Faith Hill

Anyway, I was told I was a tokenist for buying it, but I'm pretty sure it's good. I love "Guess Who's Back".

haha oops 2am brainmelt, faith evans obv. tho i half wish i was right.

i see from the amazon review that it has "catchy piano riffs, deep jazz tunes and mellow baselines (sic)."

oh well, that's another £15 saved then.

30!

Josh (Josh), Friday, 29 November 2002 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

ha mellow baselines! save em for electroclash

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 29 November 2002 19:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

maybe the reviewer had it confused with that Alicia Keys character.

I promise you it has none of those things. The beats are more soul than funk, but I think it fits what Scarface has become--more laid-back, though not without an element of menace. He's also remarkably gentle with the tracks, he could easily crush any beat with the Badass Scarface Flow.

adam (adam), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Guess Who's Back" is fucking fantastic, although basically it's just a harder flipside to "This Can't Be LIfe", which is fine by me. i'm tempted to get the CD just for that track, or maybe the recent Greatest Hits, not sure which would be a better investment. how many Kanye tracks are on The Fix?

i hate to hurt Face's ILM cred with this revelation, but this morning I saw him on MTV Cribs and he held up a Coldplay CD on-camera...

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 30 November 2002 21:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

what did he say about it??!

dave k, Saturday, 30 November 2002 21:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Scarface is a big Pink Floyd fan. He has the box set. This is a bit of trivia that may only be interesting to me. Also, he refers to Coldplay as "his dawgs".

I like the new record, but the Geto Boys were better.

its aight

s trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 30 November 2002 22:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

keiko, for getting me to buy this, I kiss you. tokenist solidarity!

but you were slightly untruthful to marcello - 'my block' has a piano riff! and it might be er soulful. but it's really nice. and er I think I just heard another piano. oh my god and a weird warbly noise!

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 1 December 2002 02:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, all those descriptive terms are sort of true, but the cumulative
effect is pretty different than the album. i think the album has like 4 or 5 killer tracks; also, scarface's voice is amazing throughout. but i don't think that makes it album of the year or anything.

dave k, Sunday, 1 December 2002 04:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

also j bluuuuunt i was listening to guess whos back in the headphones right when you walked up at huddle house that last time!!

s trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 1 December 2002 04:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

inevitably i have now heard it. "in between us" is great but mostly for (a) tanya herron's stoned to the point of collapse vocals; and (b) the long instrumental break during which the song nearly turns into "moon safari" period Air. "on the block" has a great charlie brown/Welcome Back Kotter-type piano riff (Roberta Flack, according to the sleeve) and "guess who's back" w. j-hova and b. sigel is pretty good as well. always good to hear the uncle remus voice of the only geto boy still in possession of a career, even though he doth protest too much about roots and b*tch*s. at least 2-3 other good tracks on it as well (not sure abt the neptunes one yet).

four years pass...

this album is so utterly classic. some of my favorite production ever, and even on the cheesy preachy sentimental songs, Face somehow manages to sound sincere and make me care.

This album is impossible* to get. I must have listened to Guess Who's Back like a bazillion times though, back when my music listening consisted of taping the tracks Westwood played and listening to nothing else (except also what Trevor Nelson/Dreem Team also played) all week.

*ok, have not looked that hard.
