donut bitch (donut), Friday, 29 November 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still waiting for "White America."

cybele, Friday, 29 November 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

that weezer one with the muppets. but only because of the muppets mind you. it only changed my perception of the song because it made me willingly sit through a weezer song more than once...

chris browning (commonswings), Friday, 29 November 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"Days Go By"

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 29 November 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know that I've seen a video that I liked this year... then again, I haven't seen many videos at all. Except for the week that I was working for the Stones' publicist and we had to have Q TV on the whole time which meant that I saw the Hives eight times and the Strokes TEN times and they never ONCE showed Julian Casablancas' Ass, so what is the point of that, I ask you?

So you've got Guided By Voices. Who cares? SHOW US YOUR GODDAMN ASS!!!

Cee-Lo's "Closet Freak" was so fucking great

chaki (chaki), Friday, 29 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Kylie, "Can't Get You Out of My Head"

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 29 November 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

No Doubt, "Underneath It All"

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 29 November 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i like 'underneath it all,' too.

the video for 'dilemma' was perfect. it totally defined the song for me, i think. it was almost like a musical. kind of like that beyonce movie that might have had mos def in it but not sucky like that. the video just totally got it right and made me love the song so much more. i never got tired of it, either. it's a great thing.

d k (d k), Saturday, 30 November 2002 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer the video for "Hot in Herre" to the video for "Dilemma", for obvious reasons.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 November 2002 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

That "Holla Back, Youngin" video by Fabolus. It takes that "looking like you have Down Syndrome makes you more hardcore looking" face thing in hip-hop videos a step further.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite obviously, it's the new Sum 41 vid where they're totally satirizing every Strokes video ever made, past present *and* future (not much imagination in Julian, methinks, to ever come up with new variants). Oh, followed closely by Xtina's dirrrty classic: everyone's fave lesbian-whore-boxing-video of all fuckin time!!!! [I lurved the part where you could almost see her vagina from behind]

V or maybe Vee, Saturday, 30 November 2002 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved the "Hard to Explain" video because of how cheap and ephemeral all the stock footage looked. Not populist, not Z-grade, just very mundane-seeming stuff like footage of airplanes taking off.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 November 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but it was all stuff that was still so obviously pertaining to a 13 year old boy's sense of cool: trains! fast cars! pretty girl! escalator! Thats's why it was hilarious.

V or maybe Vee, Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Em, "Without Me" is pretty fun.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

escalator!

haha!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Gantz Graf.

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked the one with Weezer and the Muppets too. "They're ALL bad!" HAHAHAHA genius.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

° that Sum 41 video with them as "The Sums" & suits & renamed ("Thurston"!)!
° P-Money ft Scribe's "Remember" - the second time Scribe backsteps into the frame on the street, he has the third most accurate facial expression in the history of cinema.
° Kylie's "Come Into My World" - neat trick, & haha makes me concentrate on it everytime it screens.
° Nesian Mystik's "It's On" - all the hataz say that it looks like a cellphone ad. & that's a bad thing?
° DJ Shadow's "You Can't Go Home Again" - I'm in favour of nearly every activity exhibited on this street!° Black Seed's "Hey Son" - haha the noo-Kiwi aesthetic. peter jackson vibes!

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Beck-Lost Cause
The Doves-There Goes the Fear
Autechre-Gantz Graf
Lambchop-Is A Woman

Those 4 stood out in their own way for me in my head. I'd also say Jo-Jo's Jacket by Malkamus...but I don't know what year that was released.

MyklR, Saturday, 30 November 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this Autechre video really all that?

The video Wong Kar-Wai did for "Six Days" was the best perfume ad ever

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 30 November 2002 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

though by no means new to this year, thanks to vh1 classic i saw the greatest music video of all time this year. it is "it's raining men" by the weather girls.

voss, Saturday, 30 November 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

dont like the autechre video at all

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 30 November 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

autechre vid sux. should be a montage of gareth-inspired pastoral postcards (no really!). i forgot about "for a woman", that almost made me cry. i will mention "my block" once more, now it's officially overrated. watching "you can't go home again" was like trying to remove an impossibly embedded wood splinter from my brain.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 30 November 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

yes mitch i agree! we were saying this the other week somewhere or other (why do the persist with silly vectors and robots and things?)

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 30 November 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

'Where's Your Head At' and 'Jo Jo's Jacket' are from last year - the latter was the BEST video of last year and possibly EVER (serious props to the mighty Shynola)

'Gantz Graf' is probably the finest example of audiovisual synchronicity i've seen - other than that its not very interesting

any video by Michel Gondry ('Fell In Love With A Girl', 'Star Guitar', Kylie's new one) is always a technical and artistic marvel thus a winner for me

'There Goes The Fear' was very nice, as was Royksopp's 'Remind Me' directed by French team H5 (the French Shynola basically, including Etienne de Crecy's brother who also made those recent Fanta adverts)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 1 December 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

'Work It' is predictably great - the Prince bit is funny
